I know that there has probably been a discussion about this plenty of times before, but I want to try and document where these tattoos are and if the marshall ferrets that have them have any inherent health problems (or potential health problem, like deafness, blindness, poorly developed teeth, etc).
Maybe by doing this, we can figure out what they mean.
The reason I was curious about it again is because Bantha (our newest addition) has one, too... but usually when I hear about these tattoos, they are usually not sables (or even sable mitts) Sari also has a foot tattoo, and she has some obvious inherent health issues, unlike Bantha (although, I haven't tested his hearing). Other than him being bigger than most marshall ferrets, he seems pretty normal
So... here's the idea. If you have/had a marshall ferret with one of these foot tattoos, post the following:
1.) Ferrets name
2.) Age
3.) Weight
4.) Color and pattern of fur
5.) Inherent health issues (including anything out of the ordinary, aesthetics, etc, that are not normal... also include health problems that developed earlier than normal).
6.) Which foot is the tattoo on, and which toe (looking at the ferret from their back and count toes from left to right, looking at the top of the foot... example: bottom-right foot, 4th toe)
By doing this, I hope to at least try and piece together what the tattoos mean by comparing ferrets with the same foot tattoo placements. If it's successful, it will not only ease our curiosity, but also help determine potential health problems just by looking at these foot tattoos. This would be if we're lucky.
Here's mine:
1.) Bantha
2.) 6 months
3.) 3.5-4lbs (estimate)
4.) Sable mitt
5.) No known health issues so far, but he is on the big side.
6.) Bottom-right foot, 4th toe
1.) Sari
2.) Almost 3 years
3.) A few ounces under 1.5lbs
4.) Cinnamon blaze mitt (she's lighter than sables and chocolates, but darker than champagnes)
5.) Partially blind, two different colored eyes (one dark red, one black), jaw doesn't open as wide as other ferrets (waardenburg syndrome, without the deafness), underdeveloped teeth/deformed teeth
6.) Top-left foot, 4th toe
Maybe by doing this, we can figure out what they mean.
