Ferret heart issues are rarely diagnosed with listening.....usually they require an xray or ultrasound. Mayhem was diagnosed with an xray. ciao

One of my first two ferret developed cardiomyopathy. he got the kind that involved thickening of the heart walls rather than the more common enlarged heart. Heart issue are typically discovered y a vet....It's spring time, and Dingo has been losing fur here and there. It's common for ferts to get the dry cough in Spring time. Even if nobody's blowing their coats, there's still extra fur around. That undercoat can hang on the back of a tongue for days. I've had it happen to me from burying my face into a somewhat shedding brat!
There is a "home test" you can do for heart issues, although it's speculative in nature. If a heart is pumping inefficiently, exercise will make the problem worse. If Bear starts out playing without coughing, and if exercise brings on the coughing, he may have an issue. This is the type of thing that has to happen consistently. Ferrets who cough from heart issues are usually fine when resting but cough more when they begin to exert themselves. Most heart issues in ferrets can be treated with meds for quite some time before the issue becomes critical.
If Bear seems to be slowing down , it may be due to a bit of depression. They can tell when their cage mates are not up to par. And mommy dotes on the ones that have problems because she has to keep a careful watch on the ferrets that have problems. Spend some more time alone with Bear. He may perk up.

Just a little update. ;D I have been busy with just personal emotion issues. Jack- I think he is the one hacking up his food. He will eat a mouse/rat and sometimes throw it back up seconds latter. Usually It is a really big chunk so him just eating too fast? Poops- Someone is having weird poops when I least expect them. I've seen slimy brown snot poops, Two Complete tar poops, Seedy poops, uh and a few other weird poops that I can't remember. Every time I put the kids in separate cages to check the poops They go back to normal!!! And I will separate them for a few days at a time. Monster- His sugar has been in the 90's. This month though he has been really slow. He eats mice in bed, lol, and just wants to do nothing all day. Fur loss may be getting worse, but it sure isn't getting better. Would you recommend also taking him off of lupron and just trying melatonin? He has been on lupron twice. One is the monthly, and the second is a three month brand. Ripplys tail fur has not grown much since I shaved it a month ago. O.o.

You may want to try and narrow down who's actually spitting up and who has the messy poops. If its the same ferret you may have some stomach issues (could be anything from diet to blockage). Until you find out just who, you're not going to be able to narrow it down. I would be afraid of taking Monster off his lupron in fear of making him worse. Have you checked out the deslorin? I seem to have missed something....why did you shave Ripply's tail?? ciao

I forgot about the deslorin again! Does it go with lupron?
Every time I split them up, They get better. Trust me! I want to figure this out. But i'm chasing a ghost ferret!
I shaved part of her tail because she had like this red waxy stuff on the end of it. I thought she might of cut the tip but found no injury. Now the fur has grown really slow. Dingo's furr they shaved on his neck has yet to grow back as well.

I don't know much about the deslorin implants, I think it's used instead of Lupron but I don't know for sure. Jennifer knows more about it. It's still an experimental drug up here and isn't used on ferrets (it has been used on race horses). It's almost impossible to get up here. Much more readily available in the US You probably won't see much regrowth of fur until then next shed in the fall, when they get ready for winter. ciao

Update- Monster is having the gel like poops. I think I also spotted the seedy fatty type poops with him as well. Lulu is spotted with lose poops but ran off when she saw me watching. XD

Poops back to normal. Monster's glucose was 60 the last vet visit. Makes me worried about my baby.
I also have a kitten with a respitory infection on meds in the other side of the room. She's exiled from the ferrets untill it is gone.

Hey all.
I am back. Which is never good on this thread.
Monster had a insulinoma attack the other day. I gave him syrupt, and than some kibble mush untill he came out of it. But I am in need of calling the vet about uping his doseage.
Question. What's the max dosage they allow for ferrets? He's on 0.6 cc once a day and it just takes the edge of his tireness off.

You're vet would be the best one to give you that info.

I second that, sherrylynne...good advice. He needs to see a vet, sounds like his insulinoma has progressed, they may need to add another drug or increase the dosage. Not something that can be answered here ciao

oh i wasn't going to use it. I was curious at how far Monny was away from the max. I've read that once they started to have the attacks thing start to slowly go down hill.

Sometimes, the dosages can be adjusted and different drugs can be tried and you can get them stabalized. If you can get them stabalize and their blood sugar regulated then your little one will be ok for awhile. ciao

Monny had an insulinoma attack today. I gave him syrup and food but it didn't work. So after 20 minuets I rushed him to the emergency vet. He was twitching his ears, the only improvement since the thing began, but still limp.
After 2 1/2 hrs of them putting oral stuff in him, He awoke to become feisty with them while they tried to stabilize him with baby food. The vet actual doesn't see ferrets but helped me because no one else was even open.
So..He started out at 34 and ended at 54. Not high enough but I took him home to finish feeding him his souppies, and to make sure he was happy.
I have to call my vet to get the dosage for his pred up'ed tomorrow. YAY! But my poor bank account is robbed. :crys:

FYI- His dosage is on a trial run at 0.9 cc of prednisolen. I also made a sucafate and water solution that I can just give to him before each dose. He gets 0.6 am and 0.3 pm.
will the water dilute the sucalfate over time if I keep a mixed portion to use in a bottle? I also have those anti-acid pills on hand but I have no idea how to use them. I want to prevent ulcers.
monster had two attacks in the past two weeks. This one was the worst. He was in a coma basically.
