So I'm finding myself changing out these guys bedding every week it seems. They get their bedding so dirty and smelly. Thing is when I take them out of their cage they don't smell lol My boys are neutered and descented do they still retain some of their manly smells? Its not annoying or anything just funny because they're both so messing with their bedding haha

I've only had them a week and we've already had to change bedding. But, that has more to do with potty habits than anything.

I change all bedding once a week, more if someone has an accident and misses the litter box (Thor has some horrible potty habits ). That goes for cages that they sleep in during the night, all the sleep boxes and other places that they have bedding set up for daytime snoozing. I have 2 males that aren't descented, they smell different but not any worse than the rest of the furbrats. Now, when Odin was intact and in rut...that's a whole different ball game... The males get very oily and smelly and they love the smell they leave behind so they're forever rubbing themselves on things...bedding, towels, your clothes everything. Now that smells bad Personally, I don't think there's any difference between the strength of smell between the scented, descented and between the males and the females. I presently have 4 females and 9 males in house. JMO Ciao

i wash my fuzzy bedding weekly.... and change the towels and blankies every 3 days. The hammocks and corner cots, and beds themselves are washed weekly and i have a back up set so when one's in the wash, the other set comes out.
It can get pretty funky LOL. But i love the smell LOL!!!!! It's true, their tails smell like grape soda, and they smell like tortilla chips or french fries.

Maybe my ferrets aren't normal but they don't really smell like anything, except for the tails. Weezer used to get really yellow ferrety smelling spots on his neck but they went away once he was on nothing but raw. Lillian doesn't smell like anything. Now, Weezer's ears smell like ferret for some reason but that is the only smelly bits of him. I don't like the grape soda tail stink though, it makes me sick.

I wash my bedding at least once a week. I use vinegar in the bleach dispenser, & sometimes add hypo-allergenic fabric softener to the wash as well. Sometimes it's hard to get the smell out though. Count yourself lucky, Meli! You have fixed & descented ferrets! =0) Most of mine are not descented, & while "poofs" disapate, sometimes the smell stays in the bedding. On top of that, I have Majik in season right now, so he is nice & greasy, & smelly! He "slimes" everything, to leave his scent. His pee is a lot stronger than normal, & he "wears" some of his "cologne"...(to attract the ladies) haha....haven't figured out how it supposed to smell good to them, but ok...lol So my ferret room is quite potent right now, & with adding Ace to the mix, there's more "poofing" going on, so that doesn't help. However, I wouldn't have it any other way! Majik will NOT be my only late alter hob! I love them, stinky & all! Someday, I hope to start breeding too, so I will have more intact hobs....by then, I hope to be in a different house, so I can have a different setup for the stinky hobs...lol Babies often have a little stronger smell to them anyways, so that part will wear off eventually.

........I think, personally, that all men happen to like their own smell! This coming from a poor woman (me) living in a house with a husband and 3 young boys. My daughter and I aren't going to know what to do with ourselves!

Ya I notice there still is some smell left behind! I went and got a little tub of oxy clean to add to their blankets. It worked to cause theres no smell from the ones I just washed.
Thinkin about breeding in the future huh?! I'm gonna have to stay in contact with you heather lol

I'm gonna have to stay in contact with you heather lol Hehe...well, I hope you do anyways! ;o) My hubby doesn't know it yet, because if i brought it up right now, he'd say "Absolutely not!", so I will wait, as I learn more, reasearch, pick the brains of my favorite breeders (Julie, Vickie, Sally, Mary, Paula....I am meeting more & more that I really like!) =) At this point, I will most likely steer towards the black solids & sables, but I do like the black roam mitts, so who knows...lol Paula, (WWW-Wannabe Wild Weasels) in Spokane is the one who just brought Ace back for me from teh breeder symposium, & I saw her ferrets. She has some really nice black roam mitts! She has a litter out of Luther Fabulous this year! I warned her to do a headcount on her babies before I left....heehee She's going to have them at the INWFA show in September! She has some really nice (big) hobs, I am interested to see more of their babies.

Especially right after mine wake up, they smell like corn chips (their tails smell like grape koolaide) It's called "ferret huffing", & I believe there's a support group??? Haha
