so i just got a male, and i think i am going to start breeding them to feed to my ferrets, if they actually do eat them breeding females -4 breeding males- 1 pregnant females- i think 1. litters- 0 the females are white and the male i just got is coloured. he is gray and white so i wonder what the babes are going to look like. i really want to build a breeding system type cage thing. right now i just have them in separate cages to make sure the male doesn't have anything. after a few days ill put them in together and let them have at it any tips on breeding them would be great

Are we talking mice or rats or what? In mice breeding that combo always gets me both colors, but never anything more interesting.

If the females have red eyes they are albino. Since albino takes out all color, those females could be carrying just about ANY color, so you might get a few surprises.
As far as gray, is he gray or is he a silverish color. Maybe a blue-ish gray? A pictures would make this easier. Haha.

Well albinos can carry just about any color but it doesn't mean that they will carry everything. I've had albinos carry a few different things as well as albinos that carried almost nothing color-wise. Breed them and then you will start to find out what their genetic make up is.

I thought albino was recessive? Or is it not completely recessive maybe? Otherwise they wouldnt be able to carry any color and the variation would come from the traits the male is carrying?

Albino is recessive. They can carry other colors but any color they do carry will not show because the albino cancels it out. That is how I learned about siamese and himilayan genetics in mice.
Lets say you have a black mouse and an agouti (brown) mouse. Both of them carry one copy of the recessive albino gene. Each baby they produce has a 25% chance of being albino. If they do produce an albino, that albino will carry one agouti gene and one black gene. So you have the possibility of producing agouti, blacks, and albinos. If you breed an albino to an albino, you will always get albinos.

Hmm, my males do not have much of an odor. What kind of bedding are you using?

I'm using shavings. i think its pine. my mom did pick up some of the wood pellets, so were going to try that.
I'm going to put in my best looking female tomorrow with him, and see how that goes. how long should the female be in his cage for. and since I'm only putting one in, would the others freak out when i put her back in a few days later??

i got some containers that might work, i just noticed after we bought them that they have groves along the bottom, i think it might be ok, as long as i give them stuff to chew on, and check it every week to see. i think ill put the female in with the male tomorrow, and hold back a male from that litter, if there is any, and put them in with the other two, or will that won't work, because they might be too old?

its been almost 21 days tomorrow, so i don't know whats going on, the female looks bigger, but i don't know, maybe she doesn't have that many babies in her? she doesn't look that big. any idea how to KNOW that they are pregnant and not just fat?
shes been in with the male this whole time, so she should be preg, or so i thought.
