He is eating the NV Raw Frozen Rabbit and liking it. Doesn't really need me to watch him unless we are at my boyfriend's house. Odd, he won't eat it there, instead he gets too excited to get out of his cage he steps right in it! Oh well, he has Evo over there, and he eats that fine. His cage is fairly small over there, but he also gets lots of around the house time (with carpet) so I think that makes up for it. I also get Wellness and Innova free samples from the pet store, I feel I pay enough money there that they owe me! Anyway, just for variety I will feed him a few pieces of the kibbles in a week. They aren't fabulous diet choices, so they just pop in and out for a surprise.
Anyway, I just got AFS sprinkles, POgOs mouse, and Evo Red Meat Small Bites in the mail today. Took to the Evo as fast as he did with the Evo Ferret, so thats a big hit. POgOs and AFS were confusing, I might just keep those for soupies. As soon as I clean out my freezer more, I am adding NV RF venison and lamb. I also found a local market that gets game meat every now and then. So I'm going to find some way to get on the ordering list to order the random meats they get in. I think its a list of 8 different game meats, plus they will cut it up for me. So thats awesome.
I had bought chicken wings and chicken gizzards for him back when I first started the raw, and although he liked it then, I think he is sensitive to it. His poops were never well formed, quite often runny, and really wacky colors. I have since not used them and thought they would all go to waste. Then I had the idea to make a soupie for Sundays (my once a week day) with the raw chicken cut off the bone with the steaks and then the AFS sprinkles and maybe some baby food to give him a burst of vitamins and good stuff. He seems to handle the chicken fine when another meat is more than 75% of the diet. Thats what everything else is, and his poops and energy are great. Then I'm going to take the raw bones, refreeze them and occasionally give him those to chew on and clean his teeth! So no waste!
Ummm lets see. I also freeze dry teeny pieces of steak and small pieces of chicken for his foraging cups. Which were a total success within minutes of setup. I had bought these 2 packs of steaks for me to eat, and I froze them right away, but I think I did it wrong because I cooked it and it just tasted funny. So I threw away the pieces with dressings on them, and the rest I added to a soupie. He won't eat it raw. Then I froze the other steaks, and I'm cutting them up into soupies for him to eat. It was prob just me, and nothing wrong with the meat. I'm funny about meats some times, its prob all in my head.
I rarely give him Ferretone, its not his crack, Ferrevite is his crack. So I only use that when I want him to sit still for nail clipping time and after I clean his ears as a treat. Otherwise, I supplement his foods with salmon oil, and the occasional olive oil. I heard salmon oil makes his fur really soft and fluffy, plus good omega 3s, and heloves it and now hopefully I can get him salmon freeze dried treats too. His poops do not smell extra either.
One more thing, every now and then, he gets a live mouse. He knows how to kill, and I find it amazing how he has grown to know whats happening, without a lot of fuss. Usually they are pinkies or crawlers from my boyfriend's (currently failing LOL) mouse colony. But because its failing, its been over a month since he has had anything.
Oh! And he no longer speed bumps for 10+ minutes at a time! Its like since his food change has kicked in, his energy went way up and he's so much more playful. His biting has also slowed down, and tho I am still training, it's looking much better after only a few days! So thanks for all the help this site has given me! Its really helping his temperament and I can't wait for ferret #2!
If anyone wants to know how I got started and what methods I used for switching, just PM me and I can try to help, or push you onto the people who really helped me!
Or I could post it here. I remember most of it. Also, I'm putting my ferret account on a freeze, unless Stinkweasels adds these 2 foods I want! Otherwise, not buying anything until maybe August!
