Hey everyone! I'm Stacy and as of right now we do not own any ferrets. (kinda sounds like an AA intro lol). I am a stay at home mom of 4 wonderful children ages 7,6,4 &1 and a wonderful hubby. We have some what of a zoo here (2 fish, 2 cats, 1 dog, 2 sugar gliders) and are looking to add a ferret or two to the mix. My hubby and I owned two ferrets quite some years ago. My husbands was an older albino, Dusty and mine was a baby chocolate, Shady both males. They loved each other very much. When Dusty died at 8 years old Shady went in to depression. A lady I worked with had a few ferrets and said she would take him in so I gave him to her. Being young new parents that was the best thing I could have done for him at the time. Now that my kids are getting older they would like to get a ferret or two. Knowing that I will be taking care of them 99% of the time I think it's a good idea. I still have the old cage (a two story) and I make pouches for the suggies so that's not an issue. I would like to get a young one so that the kids can grow up with them. I can not find any shelters near by and the pet stores don't have a problem selling them. I would like to find one that needs a good home. Well that's my story, lol sorry for the book!

Hi Stacey!
Welcome to the natural world! Have fun browsing our forum- you may find the approach to ferret care and keeping has changed considerably since you last had them. Am assuming your children are at least 8 years old? If so then look for rescues in your area, most will have stipulations about homes with children under 8, but this is a good place to find ferrets that are already used to kids.
Getting a young ferret means you will have to "nip train" the kit and sometimes this can backfire when more than one person is handling the ferret. Young kits just learning about tender human skin need consistency and repetition, which can get difficult when several people handle the ferret.
An older ferret has already learned the boundaries and is often a better choice when adopting with kids in the family. An older ferret can be just as much fun (if not more so when you don't have to worry about nips) as a youngster.
We'll be happy to offer ideas and expereinces if you do decide to expand your family!
Cheers, Kim
