Hi everyone! I just joined, my name is Carlin, and I'm 14. I'm super interested in holistic diets, but I don't think I'm ready just yet to make the transition. I have two ferrets, both boys. I got them off Craigslist, from someone who didn't want them. They were being fed Nutriphase....the kind with dried BANANA bits! I now feed 8-1 Ultimate.(still crap compared to raw I suppose) My boys are named Charlie (who is a sable) and Mojo (who is a DEW with a silver stripe down his back). Mojo's deaf. So far, they both love duck soup(which always has raw meat in it), and I've gotten them both to eat chunks of chicken, ground turkey, and Charlie's eaten a little bit of pork. Mojo is super picky, I've tried coating the meat with Ferretone, and ground kibble, and the little goober just licks it off. I'd like to eventually be feeding whole prey, because it's easier then doing all the percents of raw. (Lol, lazy much?) That's about it. Just wanted to say hi, and that I'm going to ask a lot of questions, that may or may not become annoying after a little while. (Oh, and some of you might know me off the ferret.com forum as woozle_wuver. Bleh, I hate that username.)

Hi Carlin!
Welcome to the natural world! Glad to see you are interested in offering optimum health for your ferrets! Congratulations for offering two ferrets a better home! You've already helped them by moving to a better kibble, may I suggest that if you aren't quite ready to venture into a natural program that you go ahead and upgrade your kibble again?
I have used 8in1 Ultimate in the past and thought it was a good kibble, but learned that they put a LOT of sweetnerers in it as well as being heavy on the corn products. THe Ultimate crunchy actually has raisin juice in it and raisins are known to be toxic to carnivores! The soft/moist Ultimate is full of chemical sweeteners and glycol which is basically gycerin and alcohol.
Look into Innova Evo for ferrets, or Wysong archetype, or even Totally ferret baby Formula or Totally Ferret Turkey/Venison/Lamb. These kibbles are all MUCh higher in actual meat items than 8in1 Ultimate and some are made without corn or wheat.
Its good to see that Charlie and Mojo are interested in meat and are tasting it! Even if they are licking off the kibble from the meat, they are still getting the taste of meat!
Yes, whole prey is ideal for ferrets and easy to feed also. Hopefully your parents are o.k. with this?
Glad to have your here! Cheers, Kim
