Just curious. Also how long does it take for them to say wheter positive or not? Is it just a little bit of blood or do the need to give them a little gas to make them sleepy so they can take a vile?

They usually just intentionally cut the quick of the nail and gather blood that way. Atleast that is what I've heard. Im almost positive that there is no gas involved Ferrets are tough cookies, they don't need to be put under to have blood drawn.

You can also do the Avecon saliva test, where you swab the inside of their mouth for a minute, then put it in saline solution in a small sealable tube, & send it off. It's $15 per tube. It's supposed to be as accurate as teh the ELISA blood test, which is $10 per tube, I believe. (Both of those are accepted by the AFA for ferret functions.) The Avecon Quik Check & the Avecon blood test are not accepted by the AFA for shows. No test is 100% accurate, but the first two are the most accurate. They recommend you test at least once a year, if not every six months. I believe both test have about a week of turn around time. They will mail you a letter with the results.

I have always done the salvia test myself at home (to avoid the vet bill). It is accepted by everyone that i have ever needed to give the results too.

I go and buy the little tubes of bubbles (like what are used for weddings) and some saline solution. the vet gives me the medical sawbs. I swab their mouths and put the sawbs in the tubes(after the bubble solution has been emptied out they have been cleaned of course) and then send it in. here is the website and their instuctions www.avecon.com/adv_collection.html
