I know that ferrets do not have the cecum to digest plant matter BUT can they still eat vegetables for a treat or flavor reasons? My little guy is currently having to reside at my friends house because my dad threw a fit and said he didnt want a "rat" in the house. And my best friends dad thinks he knows everything, and that ferrets DO eat vegetables before giving him a firm NO WAY JOSE can you answer my question.

No way is right. They can't eat veggies....it could become a blockage, plus there is absolutely no nutritional value to a ferret to eat veggies. Tell your friends dad that ferrets are like lions. You never see a lion munching on a celery stick, do you?

Tiny amouns of vegetable matter can be beneficial under some circumstances. (Please see the post under the raw feeding section.)
HOWEVER, please send the "ABSOLUTELY NO VEGETABLES/FRUITS/NUTS,etc. " message to your freinds because, if done incorrectly, these food can kill a ferret.
Don't even tell them that there is some value in veggies sometimes. This should be treated as an absolute. "H3ll NO!" situation.

Charmantpapillon, Tell your Dad that ferrets EAT rats, and MICE- then show him some of our videos we've posted on the forum. Many people are under the misconception that ferretsd are just long skinny rats- which as ferret owners, we know they are not.
Sometimes it takes visual proof to show them they are not. Ferrets were originally brought in to the "New Country" in order to HELP rid homes and farms of rats!
Only after people stopped linking cats with witches did cats become the preferred rodent catcher!
Didn't your Dad know you had a ferret? Will you be getting your ferret back soon?
Cheers, Kim

If its in HIS house and HE can do waht HE pleases, will HE pay for the surgery required to remove the blockage caused by feeding vegetables?
The ferrets in the wild ( Black Footed Ferrets) in the U.S. eat Prairie dogs which are rodents. I'd be looking for a healthier place to house my ferret until your move is enacted. If the caretaker you are paying isn't willing to offer the animal the care you outline, then they are seriously endangering the health of your animal!
Present your concerns to them and see if they will agree to your care outlines, if not make other arrangements to keep your ferret healthy.
Good luck! Kim
