I feel like the worst pet parent on the planet right now! I live in an apt on the 3rd floor and I let Zeph go on the balcony to get some fresh air. Well Tim let her our this morning and then woke me up and said "Giuli I hate to wake you this way, but Zephyr fell off the balcony! OMG!!!! Its a three story drop onto rock!!!! Apparently Tim didnt realize she fell. Our neighbor found Zeph trying to crawl back to the apartment and she brought her to us. I rushed to the vet. Luckily she only broke her ulna (not her radius). She has to be in a huge cast for 6 weeks. Poor Zeph is miserable! I was at the vet all morning. I feel so horrible. I cant believe she jumped/fell off the balcony. NEVER again will she go out there.

Wanted to add that I had to sit in the vets office, staring at "hills clinical nutrition" posters for 3 hours. I was flipping through a booklet about how Hills has revolutionized pet nutrition. How they support vet schools and vet techs (through scholarships and such) how they give seminars on pet nutrition, etc, etc. I wanted to gag. No WONDER vets know nothing about PROPER nutrition! I saw all the fat, itchy, tooth rotting pets come into the clinic today and I thought "if people fed them a natural diet and not this hills crap they wouldnt have these problems!" Hills prescription food for peridontal disease? renal failure? allergies? obesity? Feed a proper d**n diet and you wont NEED a commercial food for these! I was SO lucky because my ferret vet was the vet that saw me (TOTAL suprise!) he knows I feed my ferrets (and cat) naturally so thankfully I didnt have to listen to a lecture about how my cats diet was killing her (lord knows I would have lost it if I had to have that discussion while Zeph was hurt!). I feel so bad for Zeph though, she is flopping all over the place. She cant walk with this cast in her way. Sorry for the "foaming at the mouth" rant. I just had a loonnggg crappy day

Awww i am sooo sorry to hear about your poor baby but dont be too hard on yourself accidents do happen ( Remember poor Crash broke his foot not long after we got him). Im glad that she will be ok. As for the hills this is one of the reasons that i love my vet he has nothing in his office dealing with pet food. There are microchips infos, lost and missing animals, and heartworn and such but NO food stuff. I know what you mean about having to explain your diet to the vet who really do know nothing about pets needs

Well she is getting around better now (shes learned how to walk with the cast). I need to be sure she gets plenty of calcium. Its a struggle with her to get her to eat bone (she devours chicken necks but these arent always available in store). I need to drive around town and be sure and stock up on chicken necks. I plan to dust all her RMBs with some eggshell powder too.

I am so sorry to hear about Zephyr. It seems to me that animals tend to mend a bit quicker than we do. I will keep her in my thoughts....and you are still a good mommy! You are taking care of you baby very well!

Well I gave her pain meds today. She has to take them every other day. Its 0.1ml of Metcam? I dunno, very strange. I mixed it with some fish oil and gave it to her via oral syringe. She is doing well, and eating all the eggshell that I am putting on her RMBs (raw meaty bones). I still feel a tinge of guilt for letting this happen, but I know that accidents happen and I shouldnt beat myself up. Every time I leave the house I think about her. She's normally pretty aloof, but now all she wants to do is cuddle. The poor b*stard comes limping up to me with her huge pink cast and hits me with her cast and meows like "mommy hold me!" Then we sit on the couch together for hours. I wub my kitty!

She sounds like a cutie! I'm sorry she got hurt, perhaps you could take her outside on the balconey and hold her? I think it stinks to take it away completely, but I know cats can jump just about anything so its not like you could fence her in! And who would want to anyway? Hopefully you can find a compromise for her.
I hope she's feeling better now, but cuddle time with kitty sounds great!

Poor Zephyr! Don't worry too much about her though, cats tend to learn from these types of mistakes. The good news is that its the first time that she's attempted it (I'm assuming she's never jumped before). If it were a regular thing for her it might take a while for her to decide whether to do it again.
My first cat jumped out of my second story window to chase some crows in the street. She landed just fine and started making a habit of jumping out the window. I think three stories is a little high though. But she'll recover and you shouldn't beat yourself up about it, cats are like babies, they are going to make mistakes and get hurt and then they won't do it anymore.

I'm sorry to hear that she broke her leg. It will heal quicker then you think... Bo was on Metacam after his neuter but the vet only gave us one dose of it, he was getting 1ml of it.
Stupid thing is that if you look at the box it says it's for osteoarthritis, that might make sense for a broken bone but not a neuter "shrug"

I feel really bad because I will be gone in Hawaii for the first week of August and my mom will be watching Zephyr (and the ferrets). Poor Zeph will be all alone (except for when my mom comes by to feed everyone, let the ferrets out, and scoop the litter boxes). My poor baby!

Thanks for asking, Ketlin She is doing well. She gets around just fine now, even with her cast! She jumps on top of the fridge and I try to keep her off but no such luck. She has a new found habit of "clubbing" the ferrets with her cast! and the ferrets continue to try and steal her neon pink caste! Ah.......my house.......the nuthouse.
