I just made my first rice box today (smelled it and everything...no mold!). I had no idea how much fun my ferrets were missing out on. The dug, and shifted, and pounced for an hour before wearing out! My problem is, Sassy seems to have a taste for rice. She eats some periodically while playing. How harmful is this (I know rice expands in water, so digestive system should be similar), and how can I keep her from doing this instead of restricting her from the fun everyone else is having?

Well, here is my uneducated opinion. She's gonna poop it out. Rice isn't bad, as long as she's not eating much. How much do you think she's eating? A teaspoon, a cup?

Definately not a cup! I would have been much more worried if that was happening! I just noticed her crunching here and there. But see, my guys are currently in a hunger strike...meaning....anything I want them to eat they won't, and everything I don't want them to eat....guess what happens!

Is it long grain rice? It SHOULD be. Instant rice can swell in the tummy and cause a blockage. Long grain (non-instant) rice shouldnt cause issues if ingested. Just try and keep her from eating it as best you can Its amazing how much they love that box, isnt it? Try sprinkle some rice on them (like its raining rice) then you'll REALLY see them go nuts

Yes...it was the "super economy feed a small army" bag of long grain rice from walmart. Cost like $12, and worth every penny. 'Course, part of me feels bad....starving people out there, and here my pets are playing in food! Our pets really are spoiled!
