Thank you for the forum. I am not currently feeding raw. It kind of scares me but I would love information on the holistic side of raising a ferret.
Toby (Oct 07) is just over six months old and my first ferret (Dec 07). I had know for years that I wanted a ferret, but each day with him, I didn't know just how much happiest he would bring the whole family. Even those I had to beg.
(i need a new camera)
((a little more background on us))
A few years ago both of my parents turn ill and I was unable to maintain both my own household and theirs too without loosing my mind. So I made the chose to move back home permanently. So I don't have as much free-rain on things around here as I would like. If it was left up to me I would have the whole house ferret proofed and turns hanging from the ceiling.
For years I have wanted a ferret. My first job at 14 was at a small pet store and I fell in love with the little guys. (also the big parrots, but never wanted to bring them home) When I first left home I had thought about getting one, but knew that things were to unsettled to bring in an animal.
This past November I started thinking about getting one again. I have changed jobs and was no longer doing 16 hour days and it just seamed like the right time. So I do what all good kids do.... I turned into that little 12 year old that begged none stop for about a week.
Over the years I had kept up on the dos and donts of ferrets. But I also didn't want to bring in that kind of pet unless both of my parents where alright with it. These little guys need the whole family and not just one person. It wouldn't be fair to him if he wasn't allowed somewhere, or couldn't get something because of it.
So I begged and begged and answered questions, and pointed out EVERYTHING. And in Mid December my parents said for the holiday I could bring one home.
Of course Dad was okay with it, however Mom does what moms do best and gave the whole 'its your pet/clean up' speech. Did I tell you I'm 29? *giggles* Oh okay mom. *nods* I promise! So Mom drags her feet and gives in.
First night guess who's sitting in the rocking chair rocking the baby ferret because he was lonely? *nods* Yup. My mom. Since then Toby will sleep in her arms for HOURS! For me. Nope. Its much more, 'hold on mindy... I'm trying to wake up... -yawn- Okay. Now Where Do We Play!'.
So it took all but a few hours to win everyone over. My father has started to talk about going to ferret shows and cooking jerky for Toby.
The family dog isn't as happy, but shes getting there. She now at least worries about where Toby is, and shes no longer thinking he his a great big field mouse that needs to be 'getten'. However, the sharing thing is still a little dicey.
Master Big Boy Toby is a Picky Eater: I would like to be able to feed him something else besides just his kibble and something like a duck soup. I'm worried if he should get sick, what I could give him to eat if he stops on his own.
His kibble is currently Evo Ferret, Ulitmate, TF with a little FS mixed in. He has had no problems eating the dried kibble. Even when I switched around the mix.
However, I have tried to get him to eat/like ferretone, NBones, Bandits treats, the Ferretvite Vitamin treat, and the Ferretone Skin & Coat Supplement treat. He will have no part of any of it. I even tried the two different types of Tone. Just in case it was just the first one he didn't like.
The only thing he does like is the Foamy Fries, Cheweasels, and Petroleum Jelly.
I have also tried to get him to eat the baby food. Anytime the family has eating something he could eat, (even fish) I have given it to him to try.
Again, no luck at all.
