My Mom's cat was diagnosed with a hyperthyroid yesterday and the vet wants to start him on meds now. He's about 10, very active, but not a big eater (never has been). Does anyone know of a holistic alternative to medicine? His numbers have increased from last year, but they are still at the borderline stage where he can still go without treatment

Not overly familiar with it, but here's a link dealing with active hyperthyroidism: thepetfoodlist.com/forums/index.php?topic=1014.0And here's some recommended treatment for borderline: *What alternative/complementary approaches may be pursued? Some practitioners use alternative therapies for cats with mild hyperthyroidism. Because of the potential seriousness of hyperthyroidism, it's recommended that you work with a good holistic veterinarian or naturopath who specializes in pets to determine an effective treatment regimen for your cat. Some of the alternative medicine approaches that have been effective include: * Traditional Chinese Medicine, including herbs and acupuncture * Bugleweed/Lycopus: This herb may, if used for several days sequentially, have an impact on mild hyperthyroidism * Lemon balm/Melissa officinalis: Can in some cases reduce the thyroid's output of thyroid hormone and alleviate mild hyperthyroidism. * From this site: www.thyroid-info.com/articles/cat-hyper.htm

Thanks Sherrylynne! that thread is super helpful. I always question my Mom's vet's opinions (she's in Berkshire County, MA and well, I don't think the good vets choose to live there). As far as I know, her vet has only done T3 testing twice, the cat has almost no appetite, doesn't drink a lot of water... the symptoms aren't matching the diagnosis. I will encourage her to at the least get a full panel done before starting medicine.

Yeah, if he's not fitting the symptoms, I'd definitely be looking at it again. Glad it was helpful to you!
