Yeah looks like I'll DEF be looking at breeding my own feeder mice. Rodentpro was the cheapest place I found for ordering mice and they have one size box with like a flat rate type shipping. $37.04 does NOT seem like a cheap shipping price for one bag of 50 mice. And I don't see the point in ordering how much it would take to fill the box up to make the shipping worth it. I mean I'd have to get like 10 bags of mice! That's like 500 mice! With everything that comes into play when feeding ferrets raw (like bone, variety blah blah blah) it would take me a couple years to get through that many mice and they would go bad before I could use them. CRAZY I tell ya! So seems it will DEF be more cost efficient to just breed my own.

If you can, check out reptile rescues and forums in your area...some rescues and breeders buy in bulk, maybe they'd split an order and shipping costs with you.

IDK about the rescues but I don't think we've had any reptile expos around here. If we did they would probably be in Atlanta. With the hubby's work and all we would be lucky to make it.

Yeah, it's really expensive to ship (something like 120 to get to canada).
but remember, it's not just mice, you can get rabbits, ginea pigs, rats, chicks, quails ect.
think variety, that box can be filled quick!

I wouldn't get just mice, fill up the box! Still spendy I know. I've been making fake orders and pricing myself because I need larger whole prey, quail, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. That shipping kills! Which is crazy, I pay less in shipping to get live saltwater fish here overnight.
I breed mice, produce about 700 a year and spend around $250 on their upkeep, it works out well for me because to buy a feeder mouse for my snake locally was $4 a piece, and he can eat 2-3 at a time. That was almost $400 a year feeding him, and with one snake not worth ordering frozen plus no freezer at the time. Now I feed the snake, my cat and 4 ferrets and save myself some money. The pet store in town is closing so I might start selling some and see if I can make this venture pay for itself.

I wish you were closer! I was at my local wholesale pet supply place and one of the workers has a breeder colony for her snakes (she has 36 right now and I would of totally not seen her as a snake person...she's in her 50's or so very grandma-ish...it was weird) and has over 300 in her freezer which is way more than she needs plus the fresh ones and she was looking to sell some. I have the feeling my crew will be getting mice added to their diet soon....

You can always post on craigslist or get on faunaclassifieds, find someone near you with feeders.

Hey thanks for all the help and info! That one site has worms! Can't ferrets eat worms too? Or do they not like worms?

They can eat worms. They shouldn't be a huge part of the diet of course but some ferrets like them.

Mine are fans of meal worms. They were less interested in larger worms like nightcrawlers. I give them the meal worms straight from the freezer for a crunchy snack

It's still seeming a little more cost effective to raise my own. Plus since I raise chickens as well will be cheaper on to to hatch out my own chicks as well. But I'm def going to be looking into some of those meal worms as treats. I would rather give those than the crud you buy in the store. I'm already having to take my new rescue baby to the vet in the morning because he's looking like he has a UTI and this comes from a poor diet. Like poor quality cat or dog food. I swear, if I knew the lady these guys came form, I'd punch her in the face for how she's treated them. You can tell they were neglected BIG TIME! the lady at the shelter where they stayed the night before I picked them up said she could tell they were neglected.
