So
I have a cat that I foster from a local shelter, his name is Lucas. He's estimated to be 12 years old, and he is FIV positive.
This past summer he managed to break is leg - How we aren't sure.
Because of the FIV he is a strictly indoor cat, so our best guess is he jumped off something and landed on it funny.
His leg broke very close to his hip, on the same leg that he had broken several years before he was put into the shelter, and his leg never healed properly/straight.
So they did surgery on his leg, tried to pin it. But the bone was deteriorating around the pin. He went back to the vet, and the vet told us that the best chance for Lucas was to amputate his leg.
At this point my stress level was waaay up there, as Lucas had been at the vet for nearly 3 months going through all this stuff.
But within a few weeks he came home, but it wasn't all good news.
The vet had amputated the leg, and Lucas didn't seem to really mind. He can still go upstairs, and climb onto the couches. The vet told us that the FIV was attacking his bone marrow, and he wasn't producing any blood cells. He estimated that Lucas had a month to live and we should bring him home so he can be comfortable, and let him eat what ever he wants.
Lucas was VERY happy to be home, however his appetite is very very low, he hardly eats anything.
Its been about 3 months since the vet estimated Lucas' one month to live. His blood count has not gone down, but it is still very low. And He has lost weight over the past few weeks.
So in about an hour Lucas has another vet appointment, and we'll see how is blood count is and how is weight is holding. I'm hoping for the best but this is all so hard on both the poor cat and my family.
So wish Lucas luck
here's a picture of the boy, taken in the spring just before he broke his leg.
