How many people here brush their ferret's teeth? If so, how often and HOW do you go about it. I tried last night and man, it did not go smoothly. I have a cat tooth brush I ordered and natural pet tooth paste, but I don't know... I know when they chew on bone that helps, but I noticed Badger has really bad teeth (prior to me owning her) and I just want to prevent that for everyone else.

I've not had to do my ferrets teeth. I'd started shortly before the raw diet, because the vet had told me Vincent was getting a bad build up, but the bone cleaned it all up nicely I do remember it was....difficult

I don't brush teeth; I was going to when Yew was alive and on kibble (he had to get a cleaning at the vet - green teeth), but then I started on raw and I haven't had a problem since. Although I've read (on here) some raw feeders do, and it makes me nervous a little, thinking, "er, should I be doing that, anyway?" Right now, though, I know it won't be fun for anyone, and if there's not a need ... I'll leave it alone!

My girls aren't at the point of eating bone, so I brush about once a week to make sure they are nice and clean. I'll probably stop once they start eating boned meats, though.

Napoleon gets his teeth brushed. He has a bacterial imbalance in his mouth and for some reason he gets a build up on his teeth. According to a breeder he appears to have a calcium problem so who knows. I only know that he has to have his teeth brushed because he has lousy teeth. He doesn't like it but I honestly think it hurts his mouth ciao

Bone is so effective it's nuts! I fed my guys a ground mix for about a year mainly because it's easier for me to toss everything through the grinder than to cube everything up (I've had a hard time finding a knife I like to use). Their teeth were getting pretty funky so the last two batches I've left about 3/4 of the meat and bone in 1/2" - 2" chunks instead of grinding. I took before and after pics of Mokkun's chompers...just one month with bony chunky pieces has made this much difference:

It is amazing! I've seen the difference in the dogs teeth but never really paid any attention to the ferrets teeth before switching them...as soon as they came home the switch started! The only two whose switch was delayed were the first two Slink and Slither, and that's only because I was un-educated at the time and they ate kibble for about a month.....now I know better!!!

Wow JustHannah, big improvement!
They eat bone but it is cut into smaller pieces, for some reason they won't eat just a chicken wing. So, do you think they are okay or should I brush until they eat bigger pieces?

As long as they have to actually chew to tear off pieces, it has the same action as larger chunks.

What is better, a small normal toothbrush, or a finger tooth brush?

My kids that came to me with dental issues (Baby Bear and Zero) both get their teeth brushed. I use my finger or a fingerbrush. I use a natural water additive for everyone else and give them natural jerky.
