Well i've wanted a ferret for a couple of months now and have been researching the whole time finding out all the best things to do for them and i've pretty much done alot of research lol.I don't have a ferret yet but i have started to make my own cage since the cages i saw was way to much and i wanted to make one the way i wanted for like a quarter of the price ill have pics up soon of it but i'm on my google tv so i don't have any pics on here lol..But i used a old computer desk and made one side two floors which the dimensions are 28" length by 28" high by i think 16" than i also have another section that will be three floors which are 1 foot length by 32" high and again 16" deep and at the bottom of the 3 floor is a drawer that i put a cover over it and cut a 4 inch hole so it could use it to sleep in i also cut 4 inch holes in each floor and 2 more 4 inch holes so it could get to either side 2 floor or the 3 floor like i said ill put pics up soon cause this is probably very confusing lol its also made out of wood and covered by hardware cloth but i just have the back covered with the cloth since i'm still working on it i will also be making a remote litter box for it so they can use the whole cage for running around and sleeping.I also have a couple more ideas cause i kinda wanna make it bigger but thats what i have so far..Let me know what you think any input would be very appreciated...And i cant wait to get my lil baby ill have one in a couple days sorry for writing so much

Hi and welcome! Feel free to look around the forum, especially nutrition so you know what you want to feed (and depending on what you decide, *how* to feed).
Can't wait for pics of your baby and the cage - it sounds very interesting!

HI and Welcome to the group! I look forward to seeing pics of your homemade cage and your future furbaby. We all love pictures of fur babies!!! One thing to remember about homemade cages, you want an easy clean up for accidents so make sure your doors are big enough so you can reach the spots that are farthest from the door or just make sure you have really long arms! I found the hard way that peel and stick linoleum (sp?) tiles do not work very well in this application and that full sized sheets with reg. adhesive/glue work much better... The problem- the liquids from accidents would get inbetween the tiles at the seams and eventually the tiles lifted (and I had a couple ferrets actually try to chew the tiles!) and then of course the wood underneath absorbed the liquids...and the smell... ew

Hi thank you.Ya the doors are big enough thats actually all i have left to make are the doors but theres two of them so far both on the side with the two floors and there both the size of each floor which are 28" length and 13" height and i have them on hinges with locks but i'm also gonna make another door on the 3 floors side and make it the whole size of those floors just one big door over on that side and my wood allready has like some kind of linoleum or something on it that makes it look like "real" wood but the drawer on the inside has nothing so i have to get something for that.I ordered a blast gate yesterday but wont have it till like next week which stinks but for now i'm gonna use toilet flanges for the remote litter box but i cant wait to finish the cage and get my fur baby .Thank you everyone for your help and input so far i really appreciate it

Hi, and welcome Please feel free to browse, ask questions, etc! For diet, obviously the nutritional section, for health care/problem, the health section. As for the cage, I would have to see some pics before I could give any suggestions

One thing to think about with a wooden cage is sealing / varnishing the entire thing because once that urine smell gets into it it's there forever.

This is with the top door open and drawer open This is he drawer open for sleeping Thats with everything closed and on the right side there is another level its just not up in this pic This is another view As you can tell its not done yet but i just got all the materials i needed today to finish the cage and remote litter box but this is the overall look of it i want to add another level on the left side on top same size as the ones under it and there's two 4 inch holes in the middle so they can go to the left or right side...Tell me what you think i'm also going to put ramps or ladders so it can get up and down the levels and there will be homemade hammocks and alot of other toys and stuff inside

Not bad, not bad at all Hi and welcome on board. You may want to check out our cages and rooms section. It might offer you some other ideas that you haven't thought of . Looks like the desk provided you with a great base. Please feel free to prowl around the site, check out various threads, read through and ask questions. Everyone's really friendly and more than willing to offer assistance. Good luck with your cage, it's looking good ciao

Thank you.I know its not alot of space that's why i want to add another level and add the remote litter box so it will have more room and have free roam of the whole cage and not have one level just for the litter and the remote litter box will be easier to clean.I was also thinking of getting a playpen and put it around the front and connect it to the cage so it will be able to come out of the cage by itself and also i was thinking of putting tubes around the outside of the cage so it can go to floor to floor so it can have some fun

The one thing to be aware is that playpens don't always confine a ferret to a given space ciao

I know lol.I'm going to make it so it attaches when its up but i can take it down and i would only let it out in the playpen when i'm in the room its just for a little more space

That's coming together pretty good! Only thing I'd try to keep in mind is good ventilation, so the future fuzz doesn't overheat. Some metal mesh screening would help a lot with that. Also, make sure you use a REALLY good sealer for the wood Even 100% cage trained fuzz will have "protest" poops when they are upset with you over something I think another level would be a great idea- as would the tubes! A really good solid tube is the black drainage tubes. It's ribbed, so they can grip it for climbing, and has holes along the side for air exchange.

Thank you..Yeah i found gutter tubes that were 4" wide and it extends up to i think 52" and you can bend it in any direction and it keeps its form i saw the drainage tubes but i liked the gutter tubes better and it was about 9$ which was only a little more than the black drainage tubes at my store cause the drainage tubes near me were like 6$ but you couldn't really bend them like the gutter tubes
