So three of my brats have decided that the water dish is best used for swimming in. *sigh* it's an automatic water dish that when they drink it lets more water out. This has never been a problem until the last two days. Everytime I set it out, one of the three gets INTO the bowl and starts digging every last drop out. This thing holds about 1 liter of water and over the past two days my carpet has soaked up probably 3-4 liters of water. I just dont know what to do! If I put out a regular bowl they dig until most of the water is out, and then tip the bowl over or push it out of the cage. Locking crocks didnt work when they dug their food out, they still threw it everywhere..
What does everyone else use? I have 2 water bottles, I don't like them but my older group was use to it before I adopted them and I didn't want to get rid of the bottles completely and now its the only way that the rest of my group can get something to drink! This morning I had to set the water bowl on top of the cage (its a FN142) and SOMEONE scaled their way to the top and finished digging the water out and then tipped it over (making all their bedding wet and filling a litterbox full of water), stole a tube of ferret lax (ate half a tubes worth too) knocked over a bag of litter, a couple empty litter boxes AND stole the pooper scooper, if that wasnt enough they dragged my cell phone under the bed and I spent an hour looking for it, stashed their soupie bowl and while I was hunting for it, spilled my coffee. Someone was very naughty this morning >,< I think they are teaming up together trying to drive me crazy! lol

Oh my gosh, what monsters! I have swimmers, too, but when Hiko came, he came with a small petmate dog cage. I just use that to house their water bowl. The doorway of the cage has ... tab-like things sticking up so when they scoot the bowl around (which is heavy ceramic) they can't push it out of the cage. Now, they get to dive and spray water everywhere and it only lands on the plastic tray. They love it and it saves the carpet! I call that area the waterpark, since it's more a recreation thing than anything else (they don't drink much water - just a bit here and there).

I use locking crocks for water and small metal dog food bowls for their raw, each bowl holds about a cup of meat... If the lock crocks aren't working you could always cut a notch out of a rubbermaid bin so the ferets can get in and put the water in the bin keeping your floors dry. I would use one of the ones that is about 8 in high, 12 in wide, and 15 in long, I have a clear one from Steriltite (? got it from walmart for cheap) cut a 3 in by 3 in notch on one side by a corner so they can get in and out but not to big so that water can come out...

I might have to try the rubbermaid tub. I swear If I had room for a baby pool in their room they would totally have one. I think these guys are part fish!

I have a few of those "furry fish" I finally put a x-large metal dog bowl in a large cat litter box (darn those litter boxes come in handy : . It means that they can still tip the water bowl (but because the box fits fairly close to the bowl, they can't flip the bowl), swim in the water bowl, dig in the water bowl but most of the water finds its way into the litter box. It doesn't stop the tiny ones from snorkeling in the litter box but most of the water stays in the litter box. Just my solution to the fuzzy fish syndrome ciao

Hannable has always been a snorkler, he usually uses his nose to stir the dog water bowl around, he LOVES it if I put ice in it.. crazy ferret! He's never been quite this crazy though.
Do you cut a hole in the side of the litter box or just use a low sided one?

Yes Neka does this. He'll put a paw on either side of the large dof water bowl and skim his face across the top... and this is to drink. To play he stands in it and diggs till it is empty! He also cose dives to try to get the picture off the bottom of the bowl. Love some of these ideas, going to have to try it to save my floors.

When mine are in cage, they get lock crocs up higher. Yes, they still dig some out, but not a lot anymore. For in the playroom, I use a small(ish) rubbermaid container with a hole cut into it so there is still a lip. The lid stays on. The box is too small to tip the heavy crockery bowl over, and the lip holds in whatever they spill. Doesn't stop them from dragging the BOX all over the room, but contains the water

Hmmm, that was one of the other reasons for the litter box. Loki...would steal that huge metal bowl full of water, of course the further he dragged it the less water there was . Loki, towards the end, was suffering from renal failure and drank buckets. His solutions was to steal the water bowl and take it into the ferret room by his hammy so that the water was always there for him. Loki has long since gone to the bridge but other little water rats remain to keep me on my toes about how to keep water in their bowls, while they work devilishly at getting the water out of the bowls. Squiggly just takes everyone's blankies and stuffs them in the water bowl which in itself creates one devil of a mess . ciao

I put my water bowls in the shower so they can do whatever they want. I have the cutest video of Pixie snorkeling for the first time and Trixie who is an expert... I just have to find it.

Our kitten Kyou likes to dump his toys in the bloody mess at the bottom of the food bowl...we joke that he likes his toy mice to taste like the real thing. Of course, the ferrets disapprove and move them into the water bowl to wash them back off...
