1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
I first read about it on the ferret.com forum. I saw a lot of people refer to this forum so I came over and started reading.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to.
Well, I plan on keeping kibble available to them. I would feed totally raw but I don't have a lot of freezer space, plus I am afraid I would forget a meal or something. At least with a partial switch they still have kibble to eat if they get real hungry. And I will probably stick to raw meat and not whole prey. I like the idea of whole prey in terms of its nutritional value, but I know I would be WAY too squeamish about feeding them something whole.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
For their health. I have read a lot about the benefits. Additionally, I have been told that soupies is a good thing for sick ferrets and I'd like to get my boys to like it now while they are healthy (just in case).
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yes, now is a good time for me to start the process.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight?
Loki - Loki will be a year somewhere around July. He is a Marshall ferret boy, who is fairly healthy. He is small and to me he seems thin, but I am not sure because my other fert is a MOOSE! I haven't weighed him but I think Loki is about a pound.
Asher - Asher was born around Thanksgiving of last year and is also a Marshall ferret boy. Asher is deaf but no other health problems. He is also MUCH bigger than Loki. I haven't weighed him but I'd say he's around 3 lbs. He doesn't seem to be overweight, just a large boy.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc)
They get a mix of Zupreem and DFS Original. I don't really feed treats, but I use ferretone or ferretvite while nail clipping. Loki will occasionally get a bandit peanut butter flavored treat (and by occasionally, I mean once or twice a month, not a daily or weekly thing).
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
I haven't tried to swtich, but I've offered them tastes of cooked egg, cooked chicken, raw chicken, raw beef, chicken baby food, and olive oil. Asher wanted nothing to do with it. Loki sniffed it but would not taste it.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Loki is the sweet boy with a sweet tooth. He will take any opportunity to try to steal chocolate, peanutbutter, etc. It's a constant struggle.
Asher is my wild child. Even though he can't hear, it doesn't slow him down. Asher has never liked treats, even ferretone or ferretvite. He does like to be held more than Loki does though.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
I have access every day (all day). I have internet access at work, and I have it at home.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I need to take more recent ones to show their size difference. Asher used to be TINY and now he's a moose.
