Ok so I am new to the forum and in search of ideas. I recently had to move a little town in extreme southern California and brought my 5 1/2 year old ferret with me. Now she is showing signs of adrenal disease and I am not sure if I should risk the care of a non-ferret vet here or take her to an exotics specialist in San Diego (risking losing her at a border patrol checkpoint). Anyone from California with input? I love her dearly and we have been through a lot together, I couldn't give away family just because I needed to move to California.

California has more ferrets than any other state and also has more vets that treat ferrets than any other state. They may be illegal here but that doesn't seem to stop ferret lovers. Around 27% of the country's ferret supplies are sold here. Definitely take your fuzzie to a ferret vet here in Cali. Ferret USA 2011 has two listed in San Diego and there are probably more that didn't request a listing in the magazine. Côté Animal Hospital: coteanimalhospital.com/Grand Animal Hospital: www.grandanimalhospital.com/Of course just because they treat ferrets doesn't mean they actually know a whole lot about them (I'm still searching for one I like that isn't hours away) but it's a good place to start.

The link sherry posted has a vet finder on it just type in a town name and it will list vets that see ferrets.

Sorry for being slow (nothing new there ) but I'm somewhat confused. I thought you meant you live in San Diego? If you live anywhere in So Cal, why would you have to go through border patrol to get to San Diego?

can you find a vet that makes house calls? there is usually one or two in every major town. you will just have to pay them extra for travel time. have you tried giving melatonin orally?
