Would it be safe to let the ferrets fish if they are watched like a hawk? We just got a pond for free off of CL. It's 3' wide 1.5 deep and 5' long, then there is also a smaller one that drains into it.. It came with 4 goldfish, about a dozen babies, 5 snails, a frog and a leech or two. I'm thinking about letting the ferrets fish in it, I can get some comets so there is something smaller to go after.
Is there anything wrong with letting them fish? The pond will be chemical free and filtered.

Only thing you need to do when allowing them to "fish" is take lots of video and let us watch!
Also make sure you use common fish - no piranhas, or snake heads, or Oscars that will fight back.
Have fun! Stock your pond with cheap fish - no sense in spending big bucks on Koi that your ferrets will catch and kill, but probably not eat. Try creek chubs.
Cheers, Kim

I'll try to get video but my camera doesn't record sound. It will be a while before it's all set up but whenever it is I'll try and get them out there.
The fish that came with it are just goldfish, I am wanting to just get some feeder comets for them. How big do the chubs get? Are they something that can be bought at the pet store?

You can even toss some goldfish in a bathtub and let them fish that Usmom Although I wouldnt advise allowing ferrets to eat feeder goldfish from a petstore (you never know what chemicals are used to treat the water, goldfish arent that nutritious, and I BELIEVE excessive consumption can lead to vitamin E deficiency, BUT they make good enrichment if the ferrets are just catching them

Creek chubs are bait fish - get 'em from a bait shop. If you are really daring and you have a couple snorkler ferrets, try crawdads- pinch off their pincers and let the ferrets go for 'em!
Yup! If they can see them, they'll go after them!
Josie loved fishing! I haven't tried it with my new kids, but I'd bet Roman, Windy & Crystal would go for fishin big time!
I don't have the luxury of a pond, instead I used a plastic drawer filled with water to just a couple inches deep. Its fun watching them figure out how to catch the fish. But once they figure it out, the fish disappear in moments!
Cheers! Kim

Carp can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, but only if a lot of it is eaten over a period of time. So the chub are just minnows? Can the crawldads be bought at the bait shop as well? Growing up I caught lots of crawldads and minnows out of my great grand parents creek. It was soooo much fun!!! I reckon I should probably try them in a tub before I venture to the "big kid's pond"

I threw two feeder fish in the water bin in the ferret room, & it took asssistance in catching, but Majik ate the head of one real quick! I took the rest away. Zena snorkled for the other one! I kinda helped her too, & when she got it, she took it & hit it in a box. I threw it out too, but she had the most fun snorkling!

Mine love to fish too. We have a small plastic baby pool that we bring inside for them to play in and so far they have gone after goldfish and crawdaddies with their claws off. None of mine really eat them but they love catching them.

we cant have live crawdads in AZ u get caught its a big no no Well, that explains why there were no crawfish boils during crawfish season.... (don't ask) I haven't let the ferrets fish yet, but my dogs loved it!! It is definately on the "things to do when I get the ferrets back" list!

So then in order to have a crawfish boil, you have to have it at the lake - since crustaceans are boiled alive?
Be sure you have a camera or camcorder when you do get the live fishies together with the fuzzies!!
