This is a question posed on another forum, so I thought I'd also ask it here, since I don't have a clue *Have any of you heard of this? www.terrafirmabotanicals.com/home/tf1/page_63_17/devils_club_tincture.htmlI saw someone had mentioned using this a treatment for insulinoma on smallanimalchannel.com. Is this really a viable treatment for insulinoma? I had never heard of this before. I wonder if it would have been a better option than pred. I'd like to know what sorts of side-affects it might have. Anyone ever heard of this?*

Ok....I looked it up I remember doing this for another but couldn't remember why you shouldn't use it. Just knew that it shouldn't be used. Ok Devil's claw: Should never be used to treat or be taken by diabetics (works the same for insulinoma) because it has hypoclycemic (causes plummeting drops in blood sugar) action. High doses may interfere with cardiac disorders and with hyper and hypotensive therapies. There is also the usual one too, about never being taken during pregnancy as it is oxyticic (induces contractions) in animals. **Herbs for Pets by Mary L Wulff-Tilford and Gregory L. Tilford** Hope that helps ciao

YES, I am aware of Devil's club....
I read about it years ago when one of my first brats developed insulinoma, and I decided it was a bad idea.
If my memory serves me correctly, this stiff is used by diabetics to LOWER blood sugar, and it's unknown what chemicals in this substance to cause this effect. also, the stems of the plants are covered with little spines or coarse hair that causes irritation /allergic reaction to skin.
There's not much info on this stuff an/or how to dose it - not to mention that there are no standards for herbals and/or supplements. ...no way I'd feed something that lowers blood sugar and stings like nettle to my sweet brats.
That's my opinion.
I do recommend adding a little extra raw liver to the diet, but that's more as nutritional supplement rather than a "treatment". -jennfier

Also, I forgot to mention that devils claw is completely different and somewhat toxic. (I suspect the stinging devil's club is toxic too) -jennifer

Actually I tried the Devil's Club when I had my little Roo. But I didn't use the tincture version. I got one from Gaia Herbs called sweet Devil Tea. Cause the tincture has alcohol in it. It did work for her for a little while. I put a tea spoon of the tea herb in a tea ball and let it sit in boiling water for half an hour. Then I sucked it up into a syringe and kept in the fridge, made new stuff every two days. I put 5cc in her soup. In 3 days, her BG went from 1.3 to 6.6. Which I guess would be from 22 to 112. It didn't work long term for her though, I think a couple months.

Oh one more thing, the sweet devils tea is supposed to promote regular pancreas function and stabalize blood sugar.

That's very interesting. What I read (although this was years ago - perhaps they've learned more about this herb in recent years.) reported that Devil's club lowers blood sugar. However, A human-centric view is always taken with blood sugar because the assumption is you want to lower your blood sugar as a human (diabetes). SO all you hear about is lowering blood sugar rather than regulating/balancing blood sugar. I'll have t do some reading on this to see if I can find any more use of this with ferts. Thanks for sharing this -jennifer
