My hubby and I are planning on getting a pair of ferrets in a few months maybe sooner. We are moving early next year. I was thinking that right now while I have some free time it might be a good idea to make some soup or broth and freeze it for later. How long will it stay good in the freezer, and if it thaws can you refreeze it?

Oh I think frozen soup would be good for a year or better. As for refreezing... I suppose it depends on how long it had been thawed out, if it had been exposed to bacteria, etc. I really don't know since I've never tried it.

Thanks Luci. My only concern with making some soup and freezing is we'll be moving in a few months and it'll be something like a 5 hour drive so I worry about them melting in the cooler.
Yes, I'm bad for worrying about things happening long before it's an issue.
I also had a sea food question, are things like shrimp and imitation crab meat ok? Or canned fish?

My understanding for food you feed humans, raw meats can only be frozen once. Once defrosted it should be cooked before refreezing. Cooked foods should only be frozen once, and cooked foods are not good as long in the freezer as raw. while defrosting it should still be kept at fridge temps, or if need be at room temp less then two hours to avoid bacteria regrowth.
For animals they can eat some meat that people shouldn`t but i try to follow these guides with their food, only exception is when it`s left out for feeding.

Main thing with refreezing isn't that it will go bad. It's how long it's been defrosted(bacterial risks- not so much a problem with ferrets), and freezer burn. With enough freezer burn, the meat loses it's nutrients, and can change taste and texture. Minor freezer burn, I just cut off for them.

I remember learning that in high school cooking. That refrozen meat going bad was mostly just a myth. I suppose I'll just concentrate for now on things that wont go bad. We do have a dehydrator somewhere around here. I could pull that out and play with it Anyone have any good jerky tips?
