I think that I will have to go back to square one on rats with Koda. I gave him a rat late last night and didn't let him have anything else. All he will do is stash it! So this morning I chopped it up and put some ferretvite on the guts...and return to my room to see him dragging it around his cage looking for a stash spot getting guts all over in the process of course. I just want him to eat it! I think I'll have to go back to the basics and get some rat pups. He eats rat pinkies just fine... And full grown mice so he knows how to deal with fur.
Rat skin is much tougher...chalk it up to being not that hungry and having to work for it. My guys stash their rats for about 24 hrs before cutting into it....aging I gave them a rat the other day and it just resurfaced last night...some skin and a tail. It's one of those I really don't want to know things I cut my rats in half (while they're still frozen it's easier) and then give them half a rat at a time. These are full grown adult rats so they're quite large. ciao

lol so glad i opted for mice instead of rats! i didnt know the skin was tougher! After tonight Sookie looks like she's going to stash before eating - she wants so badly to hide her mouse under the stereo cabinet and thankfully i can reach up under and get it! i put it under a plastic tupperware container in her cage and every now and then i hear THUNKCLANGTHUNKCLANG.... she hasnt figured out how to turn the container right side up yet
Well after much debate and testing to find the perfect stahs spot for his rat, Koda decided that the litter box was the best place for it. Not a bite was eaten, and because I had cut it open *facepalm* lol the guts were, naturally, dragged all over the entire cage. It smelled fantastic when I started cleaning it. I need to pick up some rats for my snake after I get paid, so I will just have to get a pup or 2 and see if he will eat them...
The polish ferret are much tuffer then Firefox eat the rats...frozen If she can do it she steal them while the thaw and she became very angry at the rat for being frozen but open it and eat she always succes
Try to open the rat and remove the intestines. It was that way i learnet mine old ones that rats are indeed food. the smell of the intestines sometimes confuse then it seams. Why to use the rats in 150-200 gram if they are to big ferret sometimes give up. But remember not to buy them to young if it is for food. Pinkies are candy not food
sorry for offtopic..but 1 year ago one of my other ferrets killed my pet rat that was 1½ year old. she have chewed a wery little in her I throught it as doing the kill.. Her and her sister sleeped in her cage when i found my rat... Could it be because she actually could not open her. I actually throught it as a jealousy kill since her and her sister didnt tasted her but only killed her. ?? As i think back my old ferrets also let the rat lay ½-1 day before open it. But Firefox and her kits open them the minute they got them ?

Ferrets are usually very instinctive killers. Even ones who've been kibble fed their entire life will frequently kill mice and the like if given the chance, even though they don't recognize them as food.
Firefox - it isn't that he CAN'T eat it - he has eaten rats before before his surgery (for a while after that he could not have bones, and then I was jsut giving mice when he could eat bones again). I think it has been so long since he had it that he does not see it as food anymore? I left it in there whole for a day, then cut the stomach and head open for him. I know with snakes that are stubborn feeders, "braining" the prey can increse the feeding drive...guess not for ferrets. It was a big rat, so maybe that was part of the issue.
Why are pinkies "candy?" They are not a full meal, but it is good to give prey that are a variety of ages... I can't really get rabbits here other than f/t or a LOT of $$$$. And rabbits sold as pets on CL, but I would feel too bad about that..."yeah. he will be my pet....*feeds to Koda*" lol Maybe one day when I have space, and kids to clean the cages for me (*evil laugh*) I will breed rabbits...
