My name is Joshua, and I've been a ferret owner for about.. a little over two years now. My first little fuzzy was given to my by one of my cousins, as she didn't have the time, nor patience to take care of him anymore. So, I took him in, and have loved him with all my heart ever since. Sadly, I moved back in August, and had to leave him behind with my Dad and little brother. I miss him a lot. But I got a job when I moved here, and my first paycheck is coming up. I miss my ferret so much, I plan on buying one, and spoiling him to death[metaphorically speaking, of course!] Now, my last ferret was spoiled rotten, but he wasn't much for listening.. And as I am new here.. I figured I would introduce myself, and leave this open for any tips, tricks, and advice as well. Thank you, Joshua

I actually do have one rather pertinent question, though. I'm hoping to get a female. Do they have the same temperament as a male? Or is it different? I've never owned a female, or known anyone who DID..

it depends where you get them from. different farms have different breeding things. an RC(i think that's them) are more energetic and out there. hurricanekatt has an RC, i believe my first ferret was a RC. he was a boy also. i have two girls now, from marshall's. they don't seem that much different, but it's their personalities.

I and welcome Please don't limit yourself to just this thread, there is a ton of information that could be very useful. Ahhh, the age old battle of the genders. Ok, I have both....my females are hard core gogetters, they don't like to sit still, they are the ultimate little hunters. My boys, of course much bigger than my little girls, generally sweeter temperaments, bigger snugglers and much more inclined to sit and watch life go by (not that any ferret is into just watching life walk by ) This is a generalization and as everything that has been simplified there are flaws. Marshals generally have the easiest going ferrets but that too, is flawed as we have some very difficult marshals ferrets on board. It has been concluded that Path Valley and breeders ferrets are probably some of the more difficult ferrets to deal with with RC ferrets coming in a close second. Oh, just to reiterate what sherrylynne mentioned, my ferrets don't necessarily listen to me either...so that's my 13 furbrats ciao

Welcome i have a boy also and Mine doesnt listen either. a thought for you is there anyway you could have your boy shipped to you? Also look up a rescue in your area if you are looking for a new kid, or your local craigslist and classified adds, as you can often find them to adopt and they often come with cages and supplies. Hope some of this helps you find a perfect baby for you

Hmmm...a ferret that listens... I honestly do not believe that exists! Welcome to the forums and please read around and ask questions as they pop up. Cute picture btw. And yes, what every one else said is true. My Koda is a male, and he is also an RC ferret which, as mentioned already, means that he is a little...high energy. He is trouble and always on the go, but he will snuggle me too and he is still techincally a kit so he might calm down once he hits 2 years. Marshalls ferrets tend to be the more docile of ferrets (again - generalization) they are typically identified by two blue dots tattooed in their ear. Koda has the RC black bar in his ear. I think PV ferts might have a bar or no tattoo? Heather would know...

Fuzzy - my two-year-old ball of trouble - is a Marshall, I assume. I honestly don't know. But if two blue dots on the ear indicate that he is, then he is. Lol. Honestly, I don't know much about ferrets aside from what I've read. I don't know much at all, aside from the fact I spoiled mine rotten when he lived with me. And as for CraigsList and such to find one.. I've found many.. But it's depressing each time I hear, "Sorry, we rehomed her/him yesterday," all the time. Sigh. Also, I live with my mother currently -- as I just moved from SC to Nebraska -- and she'll only let me have one, and most of the craigslist ads are advertising for two, or more. (Though I'm sure she will change her mind when she finds out how adorable they really are). And shelters, I know nothing about. As well as breeders. I don't even know if there are any nearby. But I will look into it.

My females, like Heather's, are the ones constantly on the go. My males tend to be a bit more laid back. I have 7 MF, and two possible Path Valley's(both female). If I were you, I'd pick up the book "Ferrets for Dummies" 2nd edition. There is some really amazing info in there. Read it cover to cover, as well as posting questions in the appropriate forum. And simply- read!
