They know that when the music starts the jack will come flying out - but they don't quite get that the song has to play all the way through. They understand that turning the crank makes it work. But they don't understand why this doesn't work all the time 
They learned to push the crank once or twice. So if I set the box up to the appropriate place in the song, the can trigger the box. Then they learned to cheat - They discovered the little latch that hold the lid down.
So, to REALLY annoy the brats, I crammed the jack into the box in such a way that it would not come out. Kachina could not handle this - so she went in after the jack. Of course the jack springs out as she's going after full steam ahead. At this point, she thinks the jack is fighting back She wrestled the jack to the ground shaking it like prey. The other 3 brats were war dancing around the Kachina and the jack. Kachina takes off with the jack, and shaman latches on to ehld. all 4 brats and the jack disappear under the bed.
Too much fun!!!!
