We've set up an appt for Morris (5.5 years old, shelter foster) to get his teeth cleaned for Thursday, 5/8.
When we picked Morris up, he had absesses on his gums, which bled to the touch. We thought at first that he might have bit the cage and tore his gum, or perhaps a wayward piece of kibble caught him. But it didn't clear up and we need to have our vet do a cleaning. His blood work showed elevated WBC and high liver values - both of these are possibly due to his gum infections. We're on clinamyacin twice a day for the infection, and we've added dandelion and milk thistle twice a day for the liver. The vet wants the a week or so of the dandelion to help when they put him under for the cleaning. The liver will have to be working well in order to clean-up the effects of the anesthisia.
Morris is adrenal. We'll also be giving him saw palmetto to help out. At the teeth cleaning, if he's doing strong and better, they will add the lupron depot.
I'm not really askign a question, I just thought I'd update everyone on Morris's condition and the meds he's on.

Thats really interesting the different herbal remedies your vet has him on. Did he explain what each of the different herbal remedies do?
I've been wanting to look more into herbal remedies for animals, but with the creation of this forum and the HF website, its been kinda busy. I'll probably get around to it sooner or later. If you have any info from your vet on herbal remedies and what not I would LOVE to see it!

The subject of herbal remedies will be covered in the HF site when it opens in August. BTW- Here is the thread where you can find updates on the progress of the site: holisticferret.proboards80.com/index.cgi?board=rules&action=display&thread=48It would be nice to start a thread on herbal remedies though. I still have to write that section of the website and having sme info and references would REALLY help. Im not too familiar with herbal remedies and I need to learn more before the site opens

Thats really interesting the different herbal remedies your vet has him on. Did he explain what each of the different herbal remedies do? Uh, sort of, but I'm not good at this stuff. The dandelion and milk thistle is a liver therapy. It soothes the liver and brings the values down. It tastes like crap. He also has an herbal detox blend that has dandelion and milk thistle in it, along with other herbs. We started using this with Casey after his liver values started decreasing. It doesn't taste as bad as the dandelion and milk thistle, but it still is nas-teee. The saw palmetto helps the prostate. I asked if we should put Mr Lynx on a low dose of this, since he isn't clearning his bladder, but the doc said no. Mr lynx isn't sprinkling or straining to pee, so the saw palmetto won't help. When I asked my doc if the saw palmetto tasted bad he said it didn't taste as bad as the dandelion or clinamycin. So in order of nasty flavor (worst to best): (1) clinamycin (2) dandelion/milk thistle (3) herbal detox (4) saw palmetto (5) omxycillin (bubble gum) (6) pred (tootie fruity) I'm going to go to natural vet area, and post my docs info. He has a link on his website to the homeopathic and natural remedies he uses. That would probably be a good area to start. And Giuli, I think you should get the HF website up and running, and then just put an "under construction" area in the holistic vet area as you research and proofread what you find. I can't wait to see the website!

Was thinking about making the site "under construction" lol but I am a perfectionist and I just can't handle the idea of having ppl view the site when its not 'done' yet lol!!! Who knows, I might do it, but I still have several key areas of the site that I need to finish writing before I could do that, AND I need to find out more info on copyrighting. I dont want to have any of my stuff stolen when I've been working 1.5 years on it

Well tomorrow is the big day. We drop Morris off at Dr Ness's for the teeth cleaning and lupron injection at 8:30AM cdt. We don't know when they will do the procedure, but it's early in the morning. We are supposed to fast him for 4 hours before bringing him in, so that means hubby and I will be up at 4:30. We are also supposed to give him the morning med doseage as well.

So the vet called and Morris is fine. Just plaque, tartar, and gingivitis - no cavaties or loose teeth that had to be pulled. He hopes that now that his teeth are better, the gum ulcer will heal. They felt that the tooth issues were hindering the healing due to the germs and bacteria.
He has received the lupron shot, too.
When I asked Dr Nye what kind of food I should feed him, (as in, should I soften it for him for a few days), Dr Nye misinterpreted my question and said that he and his wife feed their cats and ferrets frozen mice (thawed of course). That the ferret teeth aren't designed for grinding kibble, but they are designed to slice and tear. I was happily surprised that basically this food recommendation came sort of unsolicited by a vet.
But then I had to rephrase my question, asking him if I should offer softened kibble to him for the next few days, as they have kibble available 24 hours a day, and get whole raw gruelie twice a day. He said that I wouldn't have to soften the kibble, that the teeth cleaning is just like us going to the dentist and getting a cleaning done. (although Morris hasn't been there for 6 years - and I'm a big baby when I go to the dentist).
So, yea, Morris is fine. I'll be picking him after work.
A second interesting note from this whole experience, something that Dr Nye said struck a familiar chord with me. He said that his wife is big on rethinking the ferret's diet. So I asked, "Is your wife Dr Susan Brown?" He said that she was his wife! small world, huh?

I got your email about this and that is just too funny about Dr. Brown being his wife. Good to see a vet that reccomends a whole prey diet (thank god!). Im really happy to hear that Morris is doing well. BTW, been meaning to ask, do you have any pics of your furry crew? I would love to see them!

Well, Saturday night was Morris's last dose of clinamyacin. YEA! We looked at his gums, and they are basically healed! whereas before they were swollen, with black and dark red "crusts" which bled to the touch - now they are a healthy, pale pink. Where the bad abscess was located, is now a little lighter colored - perhaps from puss or something. But wow - it is such an improvement.
We're so happy for Morris.
He's now down to the dandelion and milk thistle, and saw palmetto for the other issues. He has another 1-2 weeks of that.

I dont want to have any of my stuff stolen when I've been working 1.5 years on it Some web pages you can put the anti-right click/print screen thing on the images or what ever else you want to protect. Just a thought.
