Yes. It is thought that adrenal disease can be caused by unnatural light cycles.

So does this mean we should take our ferrets outside on a regular basis. I've heard that sunlight that comes through windows is not adequate since the window filters the sun's rays and doesn't allow the right kind of light in. So if ferrets require sunlight, should we take them outside? If so, how often?

I too would like to know how often, but out side is where all the fun is, that is, for people with a REAL yard! I'd have them be out in in fenced in yard maby the size of a small foot ball field! PS. love the spell check! can't find it in the other forum!

In a perfect world ferts would be able to go outdoors whenever they wanted to. In reality all any of us can do is what we can do. Use artificial lighting sparingly in the ferret living area, provide blacked out dens, give access to natural light cycles via windows, provide outside time when possible.

Of course I won't have them out side all the time! 1 Their are a lot more birds and e.t.c. that can fly off with a ferret than their are birds that can fly off with me! 2 Their are a lot more ground dwellers that can mall a ferret then their are that can mall me! (If their miraculously get past the wall!) 3 Ferrets are not built for the "bad" weather like the wild mustlides are! 4 No matter how hard I try, I can't get people to tell me of plant safety for the yard plants! (unless you can) For all I know they might eat a water hemlock! So of course, they need an eye kept on them and must always come in at night! Unless I sleep out side, in that case it will be warm & dry!

For plants, most herbs are fine. Stay away from anything from the lily family, or the garlic family!

Keep i mind hat feerets are crepuscular This means that they are outside mostly in the morning and evening. During dusk and dawn, ferrets' atural prey are most active, so ferrets have evolved to be most active durig these hours. Sunlight varies in different locatios as well - I live in higher altitude tan most, so the UV rays are stronger since the air is not as thick. So, I never take may ferrets outide on cloudless days when the sun is high. -jnnifer
