My Piper is deaf too, but you would never know it by looking at her. She acts and plays and gets into trouble just the same as her hearing counterparts. Honestly, Piper is one of my most loving ferrets. Loves giving kisses! I would adopt another deaf ferret hands down! They are so much fun! I am sure Lola will be a big love too! You can teach deaf ferrets by using sign language. My Piper is very observant. She watches everything! They say if one sense is non existant, that the remaining senses are heightened. My Piper has excellent eyesight! Lola will be just fine!

Hi Of my batch of furry fuzzbutts. Attila, Lady B, Aremis, Lady Zena (recently passed) and I'm suspecting that Little Lady Babushka is also going deaf (old age) she's already blind in one eye and the vet and I are still holding out with the other. I generally use vibrations to communicate with them. They can feel your footsteps on the floor, they're the first up when I come to the room in the morning because the door to their room sticks a little and there must be some vibration that occurs when you open it. You can use hand signals, I've used them successfully with both Lady B and Attila when I want them to leave off pestering another fuzzy. I use a stomp to get their attention or to let them know I'm there and then hand signals to get them to leave. The signals I use are the same that you train a dog with. Just what I do anyway. I'm sure there will be others with ideas on how they coped with their furbabies. ciao

Weezer is also deaf, we don't try and do anything special. It's not hard to deal with him, it's just harder to find him sometimes. With Lilly we can squeek a toy or call her name and she comes but Weezer has to be found.
I agree with Jaycee, if I had the chance to get another deaf ferret I totally would!

We suspect our 8.5 year old is deaf - he is definitely blind. I feel bad when I touch him because it really startles him, and well, he is 8.5 years old! I think he may suffer a heart attack or something. What I *try* to remember to do is blow on him a few times before touching him. I feel it is a gentle way of letting him know he is about to get touched, and won't scare him as much. It seems to be working.

How do you know when a ferret is deaf? I figured it out by the way mine reacted to sounds. Most of my ferrets go crazy when I turn on the vacuum cleaner. But Piper just stares and blinks. I waited until she was asleep one day, and turned the vacuum on beside her head. No response. I grabbed a can of pennies and shook it beside her head. Still, she snoozed on. Piper is as deaf as one could be! But, she is extra lovable!!

We think Weezer *might* have selective hearing. He may not be completely deaf. We've popped balloons, shook cans of change, whistled, squeeked toys.. But sometimes if he's playing and you open the bedroom door, he turns around and looks at you. And if your sneaking up on him sometimes he turns around and looks at you. Alot of people with deaf ferrets say they are mean or that they are scared but Weezer is nicer and more playful with you then Lillian, and Lillian doesn't have any problems. He's always been nice though. I'd love to try having a deaf dog, too. But I know they can be a TON of work. The only thing that makes me sad is Weezer and Lillian can't talk much. When they're playing sometimes he'll dook or hiss and Lillian will talk back but then there are times when Lillian talks to him and he doesn't know to talk back. But they are best buds!
