Hello Everyone, I have two ferrets, one is three in march and an altered male, the other is two in march and an altered female. They were caged together at the shelter and we brought them home to a cage big enough for both of them. We have had them for four days now, and have been having issues with the male abusing the female. I figured it to be him establishing dominance in a new environment. But it is getting a bit excessive. How much is reasonable for their type of playing? It's gotten to the point where the female will avoid the male at times, which makes play awkward between the two. I know that their play is usually "combat" based due to instincts. I've been giving minor physical discipline i.e. a light slap to the side when he is being rude.
What do you think? Thanks for your time!

Minor disagreements are inevitable amongst ferts...it just happens. If there's no blood and no poop, then let it happen (it's rather like sibling snits). Things only get worse if you interfere and you should never slap a ferret (this results in hand shyness or out and out biting). Scruff is you must, hiss but don't slap or worse flip them on the nose (by the way this is advocated on some ferret sites which is why a brought it up, not because you do it ) New places result in territorial disagreements. Ferrets play really rough but if you think things are really out of hand, then separate them, just for a little bit. ciao

They do have to sort this stuff out for themselves.. and sadly for US... sometimest that doesn't happen all that quickly...
provide seperate sleeping areas in case they want to sleep apart ... and dont worry unless there is fear poo, or blood...
just part of being a ferret...
