Those must be the ones you get at Safeway - I found the same thing....2 hearts dammit! I have the same problem - I live in an area that's so "sanitized" that I'd have to mail order anything other than filet mignon. The only blood and guts around here happen on TV and in downtown Denver - none in the supermarkets On a more serious note.... Is there a butcher near by? Butchers will sometimes sell you all the "ferret goodies" really cheap. Do you have any ethic supermarkets nearby? SOmetimes Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Middle Eastern, etc. markets have things that are not popular with the general public. We don't even have a real butcher store nearby! There are some ethnic food stores that carry things periodically. And Whole Foods said they could order them in. I got frustarated because I don't have the time to chase down all the things I need to feed. I ended up feeding the Nature's Variety frozen Raw since it's popular around here. My kids are doing really well on their commercial frozen diet, so I guess everything worked out OK. Good luck with your quest for the elusive chicken hearts! -jennifer

I get mine from Safeway. However- I have to order a case. Talk to the meat manager. You may be surprised by what they can order in.

Yup, I talk to the meat department managers. They know me as the ferret lady . They will order any heart I want at stop and shop and I can get kidney and heart at shop rite. The local ethnic meat market gives me everything left over after they slaughter the rabbits and fowl. Usually it liver heart kidney and pancreas. They used to give me skins and skulls too but I couldnt find a use for them that didnt make me vomit

I don't have a lot of options around here either. I have what Super Wal-Mart has! So I ended up ordering several pounds of hearts from www.hare-today.com/Seems like I've got a schedule of getting two big Hare Today and RodentPro orders a year. When we moved into our own house last spring, one of the very first things I bought was a chest freezer...

I am not an expert on hearts but I would suggest getting a taurine supplement as well because freezing can deteriorate taurine but no one knows just how much (at least at the last time I checked). I just buy the human capsules and mix it into their soups three times a week. Its especially helpful to have on hand when you cant get your hands on heart or when you have run out and are waiting for a shipment.

I bought a like 3 lb pack of beef heart from wal-mart for $3.51
I opened the pack and put each days worth of meals in a sandwhich bag. I then put all the sandwhich bags into a plastic food storage container. It is one of those deep rectangle containers and the beef heart packages all fit perfectly. When I want to get out a serving to thaw I don't have to thaw all the meat and re-freeze it.
I did the same thing with a 3 lb pack of beef kidney also from wal-mart which cost $3.09

Walmart is your best bet for beef oddities. I know about those gizzard/heart mixes you're talking about, and they are definitely hit or miss, though I buy them anyways, cause Zoe really likes Gizzards.

I believe it is as much as they will eat one day a week, I know it should be once a week though. The can never have enough taurine really. Mine decided it was edible and ate it fresh (Ok well kinda jerkified lol it dries and shrivels fast due to the moisture content) and I'm glad because the blender broke awhile ago.

Any heart meat is a muscle meat, and can be fed as such. Although, like with other meats, it needs to be a mix and match, to get as many proteins in the diet as possible.

ok, Chewey is currently getting 6 different sources of protien on rotation- chicken (necks, thighs, wings), beef, pork, deer, lamb, and goat. If i feed him only chicken hearts or only beef hearts he's not going to be mising out, right? i dont have to be rotating the types of hearts, do i?

No, he won't be missing out on anything And mixing in a heart in his regular meal isn't going to hurt either.
