I am dying to take my fuzzbutts outside, but I'm worried they'll get too cold. My mom took Virtute in to see her class last week (she is a school teacher), and she said that Virtute started to shiver as soon as she stepped outside. For example, it was -12 degrees today (10 degrees, for all you Americans )... would that be too cold? Also, has anyone experienced a ferret escaping its harness? That is a major concern for me.

It's also possible Virtute started shivering because of excitement, or because she's scared of the great outdoors!

well as most of you know my lot live outdoors 365 days a year...
this winter the temps were sustained at -15*c for about a week... this is while i was away in the states for holiday and they were staying with an boarder... they were in a semi enclosed hutch/run with nest boxes... when the cold was obvious to get fridgid they draped an army blanket over the run and changed the nest boxes to hay and woochip... the water was changed every 2 hours through the night because it was freezing that rapidly... they had to feed them in 4 lots because the meat was freezing too quickly as well...
However..... the ferrets were having a field day.. dancing all over the run... jumping up to catch the snowflakes.. playing chase and generally acting like little idiots... when they were tired all 10 tucked into a single sleep box and were found to be at a coze 23* C by the temp gage in the nest boxes lol
so to answer your question... ferrets can definitely handle the cold... quite happily given the oportunity....
