I know this forum is for ferrets but today has been a very hard day on us...
This morning when I got up to let the dogs out I found Lola, my 13 year old Chihuahua, in the hallway. She couldn't stand and when she tried she fell. My heart sunk and by looking at her I could tell that she had a stroke. I called our vet, who has Saturday hours and told them I was on my way. They met me at the door and took Lola straight back. After a quick exam, Dr Wayne confirmed what I thought, she had had a stroke, but she thought that is wasn't too bad and took her to the back to warm her up, (her temp was only 94) give her a little glucose, and some steroids. Around 11:30 I called and she said that Lola was improving, she had warmed up and was more alert, she was rallying. At 1:35 she crashed, she had another stroke and her heart gave out. I'm so sad right now, my pocket puppy, my heat sleeper, is gone. I feel horrible that she was alone at the vets and not with me when she passed...I hope that she didn't think I was abandoning her there....
The vet thinks she's older then we thought she was, maybe even closer to 17-18 years old...
I found her running through traffic the fall of 2005... I saw a small black and white "Kitty" running so I jumped out of my car, stopped traffic (like a mad woman), ran up to her just to discover she wasn't a kitty, but a very small Chihuahua (she never weight more than 4lbs)... I called animal control and turned her in I let them know that if no one claimed her after the 7 day stray hold that I would come and adopt her. I called the shelter every day to see if she had been picked up and on that Friday they said she's yours if you want her...off I went! I didn't even tell or ask my husband if it was ok...that night he came home to Lola, barking and growling at him as he walked through the door. Not a happy camper to say the least, but he had no choice but to accept her, she was mine and there was no way I was going to give her up! She came everywhere with me and was regularly found perched on my shoulder... I loved bringing her to rescue events for the giant breed rescues we volunteer for there would be little Lola, sitting there with the Dane's, Tibetan Mastiff's, Irish Wolfhounds, and Great Pyr's...attesting to the gentleness of these giants, everyone who met her loved her, and unlike other Chihuahua's who tend to be a bit nippy with kids, she was awesome and never even bared a tooth. She loved attention and hated being cold, which led my Dad to buying her her first sweater..he was actually the one who named her Lola, after the song from the Kinks...but when he said Lola, I was thinking more Copa Cabana! I'm going to miss her terribly, she slept with me almost every-night...I brought her home, I want her to be here with me. The vet gave me a special doggie body bag that is like a garbage bag but much bigger. I don't have the heart to put her in it yet, right now she's wrapped in one of her towels on one of her doggie beds in the family room, just like she was sleeping. The other dogs have visited with her and given her a good sniff, the cats don't really care... Chaos seems a bit quieter today Fagan too, they were 2 when I brought her home, it's amazing, as dog aggressive as Chaos and Fagan are, they accepted her right away, no fuss at all, it was like she was meant to be here... This is so hard. I know that I can't leave her in her bed and that I need to go to the back yard to dig a grave for her but it's so hard right now...I don't want to...I want this all to be a dream and that I'm going to wake up and find Lola ok ready to cuddle...
To make matters worse after the vet called and told me the news, I went and told the boys, well, while talking to them I checked the hamsters, filled food bowls, gave treats, and discovered Special Ed, my 4 year olds hamster dead too. Special Ed had been battling an infection in his eyes(yes I brought the hamster to the vet) and had been on antibiotics...I guess it was just to much for him. We adopted Special Ed this past summer from another family that didn't have time to take care of him so I don't know how old Ed was... He got his name from the Comedy Central's show Crank Yankers...Ed was special alright, he used to climb to the top of his cage and jump for no apparent reason down to the bottom of his cage all kamikaze like he'd do it over and over and over again...Special Ed! He's in one of Mason's socks from our mis-matched sock bag and is with Lola on her doggie bed.
