MY sweet Mimzy has gone. ALthough she completely embraced the Carnivore's life and transformed from a starved, weak dull crawling ferret into a bright, glowing, ferret able to dook and dance this change came too late for her the damage done to her from being poisoned at her former home, then stuffed into a rabbit cage (WITH the rabbit), fed whatever and whenever was just too much to overcome!
Mimzy went into a severe insulinomic crash late Christmas night. I managed to get her stabilized and responsive again with two hour feedings of Duk Soup made with Pingford's porridge and Marshall's DUK soup and fullly expected her to get on a maintenance med of Prednisolone after a vet visit on Monday. But early Monday morning around 1 am she went into a full blown Gran Mal seizure. Eventually she settled down but still was tremoring. I held her until she passed away.
After seeing yet another ferret pass away from this totally preventable disease I vow that I will try to convince EVERY ferret owner to convert their ferret to a totally natural diet as soon as possible!
Every piece of kibble is just one small poison pill for these obligate carnivores. ANd anyone that convinces themselves its perfectly O.K. to feed such poison is just in denial and is ONLY thinking of what is convenient for them to feed - NOT what is healthiest for the ferret in their care!
Of course this brings me to the quandry of what to do with ferrets so entrenched and imprinted upon kibble (like two of the three I have just adopted in December) but at least for them within the first several days I got them to switch to a grain free High MEAT BASED protein, high fat kibble and within two weeks onto a mix of EVO Ferret, EVO small RED Bites and Wellness COR. So until I can get them switched to natural at least the kibble isn't grain based and cheap cat food!
I'm rambling I know - but I get so mad - Mimzy suffered from a completely AVOIDABLE fate!
At least the last six months of her life she knew what it was like to be part of a loving family, to have a friend to snuggle with, how delicious food could be and the feel of cool grass under her paws, the ability to dig in the dirt and snuffle through leaves! Her legs grew strong enough to bounce her about in a true war dance!
Dook on dear Mimzy I love you little one.
