Since Christmas I've gone absolutely nuts. I've got this wild hair and have been sewing. Ok, I've only made a hammock so far, but I don't have a sewing machine, so I'm relying on my (very) rusty hand sewing skills. Right now I'm working on a tunnel to hang from her cage. I'll have to filch a roommie's camera, but her hammock is hot pink flannel on one side and a bright blue fleece on the other. She loves it. I really want to make a cube next, and my mother gave me a TON of navy fleece. I think I may need psychiatric help.

I'd love to see pictures too! I'd love to see how they're constructed because I just can't justify spending a lot of money on bedding, hammocks, and stuff like that when it's something that I can probably make! I have a bunch of fleece in our catch all closet and it would be nice to put it to some use!

This is her old hammock that I used as a pattern for the new one. I cut off the clips to re-use later. This is the finished project, with a ruler to give you an idea of the side. I've been hanging it with binder rings. The loops are made of the fabric, but I think they stretch too much. The next hammock I make, I'll make the loops with 3/4" or 1" ribbon. Some of the other animals showing off both sides of the hammock. The blue side is the fleece, the pink is the flannel. This is the start of the tunnel I'm making her. It's 14" long. Right now it's basically a hammock without the loops. Again the blue is fleece and the patterned fabric is cotton. I'm going to the fabric store tomorrow and will pick up the ribbon to make loops. The long sides will be sewn together to make the tunnel and loops will hang from the cage. Sorry I don't have any pictures of these in progress, but I want to make more (told you I've gone crazy), so I'll post step-by-step pics next time.

Trust me, it took a LONG time. I've also been making them (and the cats) little felt balls. Some of the balls have catnip, some have loops of ribbon off the sides, one I stuffed with a plastic bag to make it crinkle. Just trying to add some interesting new smells/textures/sounds to their lives. It also relaxes me, I sew a little every evening. I'm supposed to get my Mom's old sewing machine soon. If so, I might see about opening an Etsy account. I also made Noodle a nice little break-away collar.

I agree... not crazy at all. Especially when you see how much money a stupid fleece blanket is in the small animals sections of most pet stores. It's WAY more economical to just make your own cage sets. Not to mention that the stuff they make commercially is usually hideous.
I think we've made four or five cage sets, complete with matching hammocks, blankets, sleep sacks, crinkle tubes. It's not like they ferret kids care if the seems are a little crooked, they're always happy to get a new blankee or hammock.
What i really need to figure out, is how to make really good cage liners for the FN142 i will be ordering soon, so i can avoid the dreaded 'toe catching' shelf edges.

That is kinda crazy...crazy good! lol I love the idea, not only can you save money but perhaps you can make your own website and sell the products online. Homemade sells
