Can they eat all the bone or will they just gnaw on it? I know this has been talked about many times but I don't want to search through the forum to look for the answer.

They can't really eat the bone too well since it's so dense. What I do with chicken legs is that I shatter the bone enough to expose the marrow and make sure to include the joint ends. They'll eat all of the marrow, meat, and cartilage and leave most of the bone behind.

Thanks Mine love the knobby parts and eat entire chicken wings, today is whole quail yum yum. They have had only wings before for bone so I wasn't sure.

How do you crush the bones?

Mine are experienced so they can eat almost the whole bone, leaving only about a half inch of bone in the middle. I don't ever crush the bones. They've never had a problem with it.

For shattering the bones, all I do is cut up the leg with a sharp chef's knife. The pressure required to cut through the bone with the knife will do all of the work for you. Just make sure not to cut the meat off before working with the bone or else you'll have bone fragments flying all over the place.

Most of mine will eat that bone, but the best thing they LOVE is buying "SPLIT" chicken quarters or legs. It's awesome! They split it in half vertically, so the bone is split the whole way down. My guys love it, because the marrow is available to them easier and they go to town on it.
I've given them any bird bone, but with necks being supervised carefully as they are large. So, any chicken bone, cornish hen, quail (be careful with sharp in that), they eat, and eat it all!

another way to shatter the bone is to use a meat tenderizer. (metal meat hammer thingy.) kinda makes stuff go flying though, so beware. But it gets the job done nicely.

quail (be careful with sharp in that), What is sharp in quail? I bought mine 4 quails at the beginning of the month and they ate the entire bird each time no problem and LOVED it. b2dg3r - if you smash the bone with meat still on it then peices shouldn't fly everywhere. You can also put it in a plastic bag then smash it.

I've stabbed myself multiple times, and puncture my skin while cutting into them. I imagine if a ferret wasn't familiar enough with bones, it could present a problem inside of them, but most of them chew it first.

Oic, The quail I got were whole carcasses and I fed them whole so I didn't have any problems with puncturing myself.

My kids will eat nearly the whole leg bone, like Giuli's, but it does take some time for them to work up to that. They are dense bones. But your kids will get there Jessica!
