I was curious what the meat/bone/organ percentages for NV were broken down. So I emailed NV about it.
They said their formulas contain no more than 30% organs (wow, that's a lot!), no more than 15% bone (that's good, but what's the minimum?), and no less than 50% meat (too low!).
So today, I emailed back asking what the percentages meat/bone/organ are for each variety so we can get an overall look at what it would be overtime if they only ate their raw diets.
I also asked about the bison if anyone's curious! They said they are waiting for the final nutritional analysis to ok it for cats.
I will update on what they say if anyone's curious!

I got an email back. These are their exact words.
"Because these formulas are proprietary, we cannot give our specifics for each formula."
Do I want to feed a diet to my ferrets from a company that cannot tell me something as simple as the percentages of meat/bone/organ for each (or at least one!) formula?
That kind of upset me. I am always sceptical of companies that hide information. Primal actually posts the amount of meat/bone/organ content in each formula, the percentage of organic ingredients in each, AND even the calcium to phosphorus ratios!

It's so difficult to judge by the BS the companies spew. Remember that many of the organ meats are actually muscle, so it would be very difficult to find out the actual meat/organ ratio. There are no true and "adherered-to" standards for all this stuff I always recommend feeding foods from multiple vendors. Even the composition of a mouse will vary with what it eats -jennifer

I agree with feeding multiple sources. I was planning feeding half nature's variety (beef, lamb, rabbit, bison if ok for cats) and half primal cat formulas (venison, turkey, quail, and pheasant) and a few meals of RMB's. I like to vary up the ingredients and protein sources, also the compositions. The funny thing is they consider hearts an organ meat, because they said "no more than 30% organs (heart, liver, kidney)" I dought it's enough to bring the muscle meat % up a considerable amount. This is why I was originally going with Hare Today because I know a whole ground turkey is as accurate as you can get with "premade". I might have to reconsider doing hare today instead. My guys will already eat 1/3 packet uncanny (rehydrated) with 1oz ground mice from hare today. Sigh.

It makes me think that their sources/supply of ingredients may vary, so what's actually in it differs from batch to batch depending on what they've got. That would account for their kinda wide min/max range.
Whatever the reason, I have both NV and Hare Today in my freezer right now. And RodentPro mice. And Wysong and S&C and Innova in the cupboard. Actually half my kitchen is devoted to dinner for animals... Well, matches the rest of the house.

I like to use NV to make raw soupies with. Quick, easy, and they(generally) like it!

I am going to be feeding primal probably exclusively. I'm happy with the percentages, there is lots of variety and 4 lbs of pheasent is only going to cost me $22 I really wanted to go with hare today but that shipping is pricey.

I've done Hare Today and was impressed with QUALITY of the product but it was inconvenient to feed. It comes in chubs (tubes) and not medallions. I like that NV and primal have medallions and nuggets that make portioning, thawing, etc easy. I like primal but I dont have ready access to it. I've been okay with NV, but that does kind of bother me that they won't tell you the percentages. I trust NV and feel they make a quality product, but that does bother me a bit.

I bought the primal pheasent for Loki a couple of days ago and she loves it. It has really good thawing instruction on the website. You put it in the fridge overnight and it will be thawed completely in the morning. When you serve you put the nugget in a little ziplock baggie and then put it in a bowl of warm water and I put a spoon on top to keep it submerged. I squish the nugget to where it is flat and warms quickly. It only takes a couple minutes. Then I add just a touch of warm water, add some ferret superjuice stir and Loki licks the bowl completely clean. Rolo finished up some Loki couldn't finish last night and she loves it as well. I reccomend it.
Watch out for some of the dog formulas where there is like 30% produce. You don't want any of the formulas with over 10% produce.

I've heard of and use NV but this is the first I'm hearing about Primal. I'm going to have to look into it. ^^<3
