I started off with only one too, and look at me now!! In my opinion, two are way more fun than just one. And 7, even better....it's a party in my house! Welcome!!

Welcome! We are happy to have you! On our forum you will find a myriad of ways to care for your ferret in the most natural way possible. Whether through a natural diet, or natural care and enrichement, there is something for everyone here at HF! Might I ask what you specifically are looking to get out of our board? Are you intersted in switching Murdoc (who is freaking adorable btw! lol!) to a natural diet (a kibble free diet of various raw foods and/or whole prey, like frozen mice) or are you just looking for natural ways to enrich his life (like time outside, and play activities?) Regardless of what you'd like to do, we are here to help and we are happy to have you! If you have any questions regarding natural ferret diet/care please feel free to post in the appropriate spot on the forum. We are a friendly bunch, and we are here to answer your questions! BTW- I LOVE wolves, so of course I think your signature and avatar are awesome. I volunteer at a wolf sanctuary that works on returning endangered canids to the wild. We currently house Mexican Gray Wolves, Red Wolves (native to your neck of the woods ), Swift Foxes, Maned wolves, and African wild dogs.

thats great, i love wolves, hence the name and pics. lol any who the more i read the more i want to switch my fuzzie to a natural raw diet, gf does not liek the idea of feeding him live things, her mom is a wildlife rehab, so she has a few issues with that. does not bother me a bit if it best for him. but i do have to keep her happy so it looks like frozen raw things, if he will take to it. had a hard time switching foods when i first got him home, but i am going to try. i defiantly want murdoc to be happy and healthy and this seems the best way to do it. wish me luck and i am sure i will have alot of questions.. lol

Most people that feed "whole prey" feed frozen-thawed. IMO its better then live because live can trasmite parasites to your ferret, and they can REALLY bite down hard on your ferret. We feed a live mouse once in a blue moon (for enrichment) but we stick with frozen-thawed prey. Its a H*LL of alot cheaper then live If you have any questions about natural diets, please feel free to post them in the nutrition section in the subforum "Natural diet newbies and general feeding questions". If you do decide to undertake the switch to whole prey, we are here for you all the way! We can even guide you step-by step or pair you up with a "mentor" that will guide you along the way! IMO whole prey is THE BEST diet for a ferret, raw is good too (definitly better then kibble! Yuck, kibble!) but Whole prey just comes out on top (atleast I think so). Most people buy their whole prey from Rodentpro they are an excellent provider Check out our holistic ferret photo gallery for pics of ferrets eating natural foods: holisticferret.myphotoalbum.com/albums.phpFeeding mice (as others will also tell you) really isnt bad at all. hardly any smell, and no, blood and guts dont go flying everywhere lol! Its fascinating to watch them eat, very "discovery channel-esque!" I hope we are able to help you out! Please feel free to ask all the questions you want.

i used to feed my red tail boa mice, rats, sometimes my hand lol. so thats no issue for me, but like you said the injures from feed live can be kinda bad if they get ahold of em in the wrong place, i will check out the frozen stuff, never had luck with my snake and frozen food always wanted live but i am hopefull.

Ferrets are a bit different, they are normally alot more receptive to eating frozen food. Switching them to natural food from kibble can be a pain, but it all depends on the age of your ferret.
How old is Murdoc and what does he currently eat?

hey is around 15 months if the store told me right. and they had him on some "cheap crap" as the girl that sold him to me said. she suggested a cat food kibble rather then a ferret kibble natural diet i think is the name of it. it was a bit more pricey then the ferret food, but she said it was more meat based then any of the ferret foods they carried. that bag is almost empty so i will be adding some frozen pieces of things to his food in the next few days to see if i can get him the switch

Feel free to start a thread in the "natural diet newbies" section. Re-post this info about Murdoc's age, current diet, and the diet you want to switch him to. Feel free to make a list of questions (such as how to start on the diet, how to feed a balanced and varied diet, etc) That way our members can jump in and answer your questions and we can track your progress.
I am excited for you! You will see such changes in Murdoc once he "goes natural". It might be frustrating/difficult to get him to switch, but IMO it is WELL worth it!

So glad to hear you've decided to go with a natural diet - it is just SO MUCH healthier than any processed food. Whole prey is the best, 2nd being RMB - which is what we do and our ferrets fair wonderfully. I remember when I had one ferret - heehee - soon became 2 then 7 then 10!! Ferret math is a beautiful thing. Now we ONLY have 7! You'll find everyone here very helpful and friendly.
