Any pet is a life time commitment, but what if that life takes a drastic turn?
(I've split this in to two parts. Part 1 is the back story and Part 2 is what I need help with)
Part 1
Since I found out that my family and I will be moving to Alberta, Canada, I've been thinking about how it's going to affect my ferrets. Especially Chewie. My big squishy boy who had such a hard life before I could care for him. In order to get across the border, I'd have to have him and my other ferrets vaccinated. I have no way of knowing if Chewie's ever been vaccinated or what crap has been put in to him. I hate having to vaccinate my other ferrets, but Chewie's old and who knows how he'd react to getting vaccinated? The trip is also 5-6 days and I'm not sure he could handle it. It's going to be super stressful, hot, and long.
I am so glad that when my parents pressured me to find Chewie a new home before, I refused. He is one of the sweetest most mellow ferrets ever. Chewie and I have gone thru a lot together in less than a year. When I first brought him home he was aggressive, skinny, and almost hairless. He started to decline, but after a shot of lupron he started getting better! Once Chewie had two lupron shots he became a gorgeous, hairy, strong ferret! Besides his sick stomach, he was pretty healthy for a while. Then I almost lost him. I was certain that I was going to be posting in the Rainbow Bridge. Chewie pulled thru and was better with in three days! Our bond is now stronger and we both love each other to death.
Now my family is moving across the country to a different country. I've weighed the good and the bad. Do I keep Chewie because I love him and don't want to put him in to yet a different home? Or do I do what is possibly best and find him a home? I have found a vet where I'll be living, but from my understanding they are not extremly good with ferrets. What happens if Chewie became sick, but the vet couldn't figure out what it is/was?
Apparently my parents have not told the landlords that I own ferrets. I guess they thought that it was already hard enough to find a place that will take our rather big family and a pit bull. That's already a bad situation and with Chewie since he is the smelliest out of the group, the land lords would find out. Chewie also needs to be watched closely out of the cage to make sure he doesn't poo on the carpet. Sometimes I miss it and it stains the carpet. Ferret poo and pee is hard to get out of white carpet, let me tell you!
Part 2 will be in my next post!
