My DEW Zuko has rat tail and I'm not sure what to do for it. I read some where to just wash it good and use a black-head wash on it for sensitive skin. I was just not sure about that.
Thank you Stacy

Get an acne wash with benzoyl peroxide. Avoid the ones with acetasylic acid. Another good thing is the acne face wipes- kind of like baby wipes, but meant for acne.

My little guy gets it every year just around now, actually he has it right now! I use an acne wash (just once a week, b/c I feel like its harsh...plus im pretty holistic in general) I also have used astringent in the past, though I usually just use baby shampoo now....its just something that sometimes you cannot control, some guys are prone to it... (oh and I also use a soft toothbrush...like a small very soft kid one...and i brush the soap on his tail with it....I find it works well)

My Kachina looks like a lab rat right now. She did this last year too. If the blackheads are smaller and the skin is smooth, I just ignore it. If the skin seems really waxy, and the blackheads are large, and sometimes almost scale-like (my first two ferts got really bad balckhead-tails), then oatmeal soap or oatmeal scrub can help daily once a week isp robably better for the astringent type stuff since I'm living proof that you can have zits with dry skin Also, since my Kachina gets such a magnificent rat-tail and is 4.5 years old, I did an adrenal panel on her and she's fine according to the bloodwork Sept.is the "low" time of the year for hormone levels. I'll probably test her again in early february to see where we're at. -jennifer

Good thread with helpful tips.- Thanks Y'all!! My boys' tails are slightly balding right now. First I got paranoid, fearing adrenal, but my local ferret shelter mom said to put astringent on the tails (look for blackheads) and the fur should grow back with their new coat. I like the soft toothbrush idea.
What about witchhazel? Good/bad?

Sari (only 1.5 years) started getting dry hair on her tail, then some hair loss, then blackheads like crazy. They are pretty big. I've tried acne washes and this new product at the clinic that helps with everything from seborrea to canine/feline acne (I tried the wipes). Nothing has worked, so I'm going to try some of the ideas here. I'm curious about whitchhazel too Jen. Any other natural anti-acne herbs/treatments? Thanks guys!
