Hi! Quick question... We just got the little monsters a dig box FULL of 60lbs of rice They are in love with it! But I noticed while playing in it with them that my hand is completely covered in a fine dust. Should I have rinsed off the rice or is this ok? I just worry about them breathing in all that dust. Thanks for your help!!

I didn't rinse off my rice (I didn't give them the pleasure of digging in 60 lbs of it either ) I would think that if you rinse the rice that you may soften the outer hull and soften the rice. I may be wrong.... See if you get a lot of sneezing when your little ones burrow and dig. If you do you may want to rinse it off or take it outside and just stir it up and let it naturally fall by the shovel full or empty it into another box on a windy day. This will clear most of the excess dust out of the rice leaving only the rice in the box but my guys were digging in their dirt dig pile outside and it's by far more dusty (at least during the dry spell, it's not right now as they were enjoying the puddles from the rain this morning). ciao

Mine haven't had a problem with it either. When they get bored with it(and at some point they will ), put in a few drops of vanilla extract, and stir it up well. Brand new toy again

Thanks for the advice! Think I will take it outside and try to get some of the dust out. I probably went WAY overboard with the amount of rice but they don't seem to mind! My boyfriend gave me a funny look at walmart that day tho.

put a screen with fine holes over the top, then vacuum over the screen. it should suck up the dust without sucking up the rice =) if all else fails put it near an air purifier. eventually there wont be as much dust

I'm curious,do any of your ferrets stash food in the rice box?
That's the main reason i don't have a rice box. They have a shreded paper box and they do stash food in it. Not too worried about them eating a bit of paper.

I've found it occasionally but rarely. Not enough to be a problem and the rice box is in the kitchen with the food bowl. ciao

I've been leary having a rice box, incase they'd digest some of the rice.

My understanding is that it's less of a problem if you use raw rice, not instant. ciao

The problem I've heard with instant rice is it will swell in the tummy/intestines, potentially causing a blockage. The regular stuff doesn't swell like that. Some of mine have ingested the long grain variety, and I just find it in their stool later.
