As I'm waiting for a mentor to help me complete the switch to whole prey/ raw diet I went ahead and studied some of the old threads and started my two youngest on raw foods. I was afraid they would become imprinted on the kibble if I waited much longer. I have also started a few of the others on commercial raw. I have two questions related to stool appearance.
1) The color of some stool is odd...almost a greyish/tan/olive color. Is this normal or indicative of a problem? This is from the fuzzies who are eating the commercial raw diet.
2) I found chunks of bone in one of the stool as I was cleaning out the box this morning. No blood...and the edges of the bones seemed to be smoothed over...but they seemed rather large and I was very glad that they were able to pass through the intestinal tract. I thought I had read somewhere that their gastric juices are so acidic that it disinegrates bones during digestion. I've been giving them chicken wings, legs and thighs for their meaty bones. Any advice?
Thanks,
Brenda

When I started switching mine, they had some really funky poops- almost a rainbow . I can still pretty much tell what they've eaten by the colour/consistency! As for the bone in the stool, that's also quite normal during transition. It does take a bit for their bodies to adapt to what they should be doing. Mainly the stomach acids dissolving ALL the bone. So bone shards aren't uncommon right now, and no- it won't cause a problem. They'll pass it just fine.
