I am wondering who everyone uses as a whole prey distributor? The one recommended to me was rodentpro. Just wondering.

I have heard wonderful things about rodent pro. I am currently looking into hare today. they have whole prey and ground whole prey unless I am mistaken and their shipping seems reasonable.

I get my mice from Big Cheese in Dallas, as they have much better quality and a lower price than RodentPro. I've gotten mice from RodentPro twice when Big Cheese was low on production, and was very disappointed with their size and overall quality. When the ferret owner I was splitting them with and I both complained about their poor quality, RodentPro sent us another 350 free of charge. While I appreciated it, the second 350 were the same poor quality. My main concern was that they were such poor quality that their nutritional value couldn't have been very high.

If RodentPro really is one of the better ones, I'd sure hate to see what mice from the others look like! Mice are far and away the favorite food of all my guys, but they were reluctant to eat the ones from RodentPro and a lot of times wouldn't eat the whole thing. I've been told by reptile people that a lot of mice/rat sellers get excess stock from labs and these certainly looked like discards from a lab. They had poor coats, were not in good weight, and were dirty. Plus, they were just loose in the plastic bag...Big Cheese mice are clean and vacuum packed to stay fresh. Yes, Big Cheese ships. Here's a link to their Website: www.bigcheeserodents.com/

I don't know anything about any of these suppliers and have been telling people to check out rodentpro and haretoday, neither ship up here, so I've been relying on word of mouth. I went out and found a supplier who breeds specifically for her snakes. I buy all her large and excess rats from her that have got too big for her snakes. I raise my own mice, so I know exactly what goes into their tummies, which then finds it's way into my fuzzbutts tummies . Perhaps, we should put together a list of suppliers that people can check out and rate as to how good their product is. What do you think?? ciao

I think it would be hard to rate the various suppliers unless people know what mice in good weight and condition should look like. For instance, I'd have probably thought RodentPro was okay if I didn't have the mice from BigCheese to compare them to.
It might be a good idea for anyone wanting to find a quality source of mice to check with local snake/reptile owners, as they're probably the best informed. Almost all the snake and reptile owners/breeders, as well as the local zoo, in my area get their mice from BigCheese. I couldn't find anyone who bred their own mice or had any interest in doing so, which is what I was looking for...in addition to their recommendations re suppliers. None of them had anything good to say about RodentPro and the other suppliers I asked them about.
Interesting that yours will eat rats, Heather. I've given them to the ferrets several times over the years, and none of mine would even touch them. I figured they must smell enough different from mice that they didn't recognize them as food. I may try again with younger ones (I was given adult rats before) when I have my next litter and see if that might make a difference.
If I had an outside area (garage, shed, etc), I'd seriously consider breeding mice again...but never again do I want that odor in the house. It's 10 times worse than the smell of a hob in rut!

My guys started with rats, that may be why they will eat them without question. This is Mr Fun-Go B. Squiggly with his rat prize that is about to be stashed and well chewed I agree about the smell of mice, ferrets (even hobs in rut) smell much better...though Odin did smell really rank...and he did horrible things to my pillows Ok, why don't we put together a list of distributors that we use, that way we can refer anyone who's looking (especially in certain areas) for various prey "feeds" I agee it's probably hard to rank quality but we can put down if we've had difficulties with them. ciao
