A ferret friend who knows I feed raw informed me the other day that our local health food store carries pet products, including Nature's Variety raw! So I went over today to check it out and came home with two of the 1lb sample packs (chicken and lamb) for my furkids to try now that two of them seem to be willing to eat anything raw and the other three are eating soups. All of them have been off kibble since the end of July!
I was surprised to find that the NV stuff wasn't too expensive. I paid $5.60 each for the 1lb trial sizes. The 3lb bags ranged from $14.00 for chicken to $20.00 for rabbit. They carry all the flavors (chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, rabbit, venison, salmon) and the lamb actually came out to be less expensive than buying it ground at the grocery store. Plus, they get the bone content they wouldn't get from grocery store meats and it makes more exotic meats like the rabbit and venison available to me locally. If I ever want to order them by the case (I can't remember for sure, but I think they said they come in cases of 9 of the 3lb bags) I get a 15% discount.
I'm kind of surprised at where my raw journey has taken me over the last month since I started switching everyone. Originally, I'd planned to feed only whole prey, and now I'm looking at eventually having a mix of frankenprey (thanks Erinn for getting me hooked on this!), whole prey, and commercial raw. I'm glad I've been able to explore all the different options. I was pretty stubborn at first about only feeding whole prey, but this forum has helped immensely in making me more open-minded. I'm so excited and I'm already noticing improvements in my ferrets' odor and the softness of their fur.
Just wanted to share. This really made my day!
Oh, and if anyone lives in or close to Central Pennsylvania, check out Nature's Pantry...that's where I got it!
