My fridge has been out for a few weeks now, so I can't keep raw meat for my boys I had to buy them 8-in-1 Ultimate, since that looked like the best out of the bunch (of kibbles)... I can go pick up some ferret food in Dallas, TX, but is there anything better that I can get for them from a store? We still do occasional live rats/mice as treats. Weasel now seems stockier than Slinky (complete opposite of last winter), but that could be since its summer. We'll probably go back to raw when I get a new fridge, but who knows how many weeks that will be from now? There's a couple of places here that sell live chicks, but last time they looked too big for a 1st time live chick meal.

Buy a cooler and some ice, then you can have your raw stuff. Keep the cooler in a dark cool shaded room in your house and the ice should last a long time. Also when refilling your cooler with ice, my money saving tip is hit up a motel's ice box! I use to live down the street from one, and I never used ice trays I would just bring my bucket to the motel, fill it up and go home Also Blocks of Ice last much longer than the cubed ice.

I agree I would rather spend money on a styrafoam (cheap) cooler than kibble.

What about freeze-dried and dehydrated foods in the interim?

What about freeze-dried and dehydrated foods in the interim? Are there any brands sold in stores or which site would be best to order from?

Buy a cooler and some ice That's how I've been keeping the human food. It's been a nasty mess too... cheese gets all wet and nasty... I haven't been buying raw meat for humans either... we've been on sandwiches for a few weeks now. Guess I should spend $80 on one of those mini-fridges for now... or just buy live prey more frequently.

Use Tupperware in the cooler. ZipLoc Baggies are great at keeping the water out of the food. And also a Block melts slower so you would have less problems. I have gone camping so many times I've figured out all the tricks. But basically anything you don't want to get wet, get some kind of container that can sit on top of the ice to keep from getting wet, Stuff with lids, or ziploc baggies. If you can get it Dry Ice evaporates. I don't like working with it much though 'cause it's expensive and freeze burns things.

Yep look at Casey's Hidden Pantry --- some great foods there. Also check out some locally-owned pet stores, often they'll carry things like Stella and Chewy's, Wysong, and Ziwipeak. And most will order them if you ask!

I'll check Casey's prices. Wysong looked good, but price might be too much (7oz doesn't seem like much food). Thank you!

ZipLoc and Glad make good ones, but don't use the ones that have the zipper, because I found it doesn't matter what brand it it, you can't get them completly sealed, as convenient as a zipper is, it's not worth the extra $$$

How's the hunt for food going?
Wysong is the most expensive food we carry, and although it may seem like a lot for only 7oz, the 7 oz bag is actually larger than you'd think. Remember that the moisture is removed from the food - it's lighter than kibble and frozen. For example, imagine what 7 ounces of cotton balls would be. *smile*
Best bang for the buck with freeze dried raw is the AFS, though. Lindsay's clan loves the stuff. Ours will eat it, but prefer the Wysong and Stella and Chewy's.
