I'm thinking of getting a playpen for my ferrets. It just seems like a handy thing to have around. I was wondering if anyone feeds their ferrets in a playpen? I know the Marshall's ones also have mats that fit them that can go over or under the pen. It seems like those would make cleanup and sanitation much easier if you put it under the playpen to cover the floor. My only concern is that my kiddos wouldn't eat right away and they'd be stuck in there until they ate or they got so frustrated that they gave me the cute face and I let them out hungry and gave them food in their cage again. Sully and Nuka chow right down, but the rest of my girls tend to nibble here and there. I'm also looking into building a few feeding dens, whether I use the playpen or not. My ferrets love to hide away baby meeses and that is just not okay in mommy's bedroom, haha.

What....don't like wee meeses in your bed A playpen might be a good set up for your guys. It depends on what they're used to and how you normally feed. My guys enjoy the playpens....they're things to climb out of and back into I"ve got a couple who will not eat if anyone's there....they have to go off and at eat in private. Loki hates sharing, so will take the bowl and everything off and hide it. Most of the time it's just under the dining room table or under my art portfolio...other times I've found the bowl under my bed at the other end of the house. Stuffed under the lazy boy (his hidey, his pet kitty is hidden there), in the cat tower tube, under the fish tank...he gets imaginitive sometimes I found those little plastic habitats (they look like igloos) for rabbits and guinea pigs work very well for feeding dens. ciao

Thanks Heather, and OMG that picture of Loki his hysterical! I'm definitely going to invest in one and try it out. If nothing else, it'll keep them from trying to climb in the trash bags when I clean their cages, lol. I just have to wait till next paycheck 'cause most of this one has been spent on things for the new ferrets and raw meat.

I find the playpen is a great item to have around - whether you use it for the feeding purpose or not. Mine comes in handy when I have intros to do, go on trips, take the kids to my parents', take them outside, etc. It definitely is worth the money and it sounds like it'd be handy for your situation right now. A word of warning though, the mats are not remarkably easy to clean, and are of a canvasy material that soaks up things. So maybe some placemats or something underneath the foods too I have a couple feeding dens around, but those are mostly for treats and stash toys. The kids' food is in the cage, and I generally skewer meats with shower clips and hook 'em to the cage. This way they can't run off with the food, and since my kids are free-roam, it certainly makes things easier. Also, it's consistent as they know where to go to let me know they're hungry, or to look for food.

Oh, I learned about the mats today when my friend brought her pen, mat, and two of her weasels over and all 7 of our kids took to pooping all over the place! "Look Mom! Presents!"

yes, the mats are VERY hard to clean!!! even with soaking them with the nature's miracle and then scrubbing and/or putting it in the washer.
still has odor...well, might not if it was only ferret stuff...the cat decided to pee on it and THAT odor just won't go.

Our playpen mat stinks, too. I'll fold it up and when I unfold it- PHEW! Smells like a locker room. I, personally, don't think it's too hard to clean up though. No better than the textured floors in the FN. I give mine their raw in the playpen right now until I find a box that they won't be able to get out of or a storage bin or SOMETHING. I works pretty good and keeps all the yucky stuff in one spot. Don't know what I'd do without my playpen! I use it to block off the computer and fish tank in my room when they're not in it playing!
