I have 5 ferrets. Ranging in age from almost 2 yrs to 9 months. All are currently raw fed. None of them have any health problems. Now on to my question.
When they are out in their outside playpen (20' by 30' blocked in play area) Falkor and Panda are always on the hunt for insects and worms. We have never given them as treats or "introduced" the fuzzy kids to them they did this on their own. Falkor also tries to catch flies and eat them. The other kids do not hunt so to speak but do try and steal them after Falkor has gotten them.
None of the kids have ever refused new food other than when we first switched them to raw and Taz did take longer than the rest of them but she loves her raw now. The first time we offered Bison and Lamb there was much hissing and screaming lol
We are now thinking of adding mice to their menu but are unsure how to go about it. Should we try live with Falkor given his "instinct" to go after moving things and eat them or go with frozen?

Hi and welcome on board You're guys appear to understand about hunting and eating what they hunt...they may just go to eating mice. Many people try feeding pinkies and move up as their guys become more competant and eat what they kill. I found my guys were motivated by movement and squeeking....so pinkies didn't interest them much. Feeding frozen or live is a personal thing. Some cannot bring themselves to allow their guys to hunt as their choice of prey is often small rodents and many have had these as pets at one time or another. Can we say for sure that Falkor will eat his prey, I would say he would but with ferrets there are no guarantees I've known a few that are in the mentoring program who's furbabies have hunted, and killed proficiently but don't have a clue about eating what they've caught. I've got a furbaby who will not in any way shape or form hunt....he will eat them though. In fact his favourite meal is mice. If they're live he will snuggle them , if they're dead they're dinner . Good luck, let us know how it goes ciao

We are going to try frozen on the first. Should we warm them or do like we do with the raw and just let it thaw to room temp before serving? *edited to add* I also posted a question about NV raw for feeding as well

I serve them frozen....if the guys want them thawed they just leave them alone I find that they like certain parts frozen... and then leave the rest of the mouse to thaw. If it's really warm they like moucicles....during the winter they often let them thaw out. Put it down to personal preferance of your furkids ciao
