Just a quick post to introduce a new member of my crew who is well on her way to becoming natural! Liza is reported to be three yearss old, had been poisoned after an excursion under the sink. Her cage mate died from the poisoning, she pulled through - more or less- but was no longer bouncy and fun for the owner's kids - they pretty much neglected her and kept her barely alive on Walmart brand ferret kibble! Tucked her away in a cage with a RABBIT! And when they realized she couldn't really walk, was covered with fleas and had matted fur, decided to offer her a different home.
a chance encounter at a car parts store put her on the path tomy door and now she has a new forever home! Needless to say I don't do kibble, much less Walmart kibble for my 5 but in Liza's case I opted to offer her a relatively familiar item but mixed with better items, so I picked up "Wellness CORE" cat food - because a comparison to Totally Ferret, 8 in one, and other ferret kibbbles ( Evo not available on short notice in my area) showed the Wellness CORE to be free from grains and cereals but using a potato base starch, however the first couple ingredients were from actual meaty sources. Guaranteed analysis says 50% protein with an 18% fat.
so I added a few things and mashed it all togehter with warm water and watched her chow down!
Here's my recipe so far:
1 ounce unsalted lard,
half well beaten egg( about an ounce),
1 turkey heart ( or two chicken hearts),
2 ounces raw cornish hen meat with skin,
Nutrition data for just THAT part of the recipe can be found here:
www.nutritiondata.com
but some key info is that the recipe offers:
242mg Omega 3 fatty acids and 3328 mg omega 6 fatty acids,
it is 70% fat, 28% protein 1% carb (not exactly sue where the carbs come from - but analysis indicates it is there)
It is a good source of Protein and Selenium and very good source of B12
it has 15% iron, 5% Vitamin A (244 IU)' 4% Vit C(2.1 mg), 18% zinc(2.6 mg), 3% calcium (25.7mg)
To that I add one tablespoonful of Uncle Jim's Duk Soup which offers;
34% protein, 16% fat, folic acid, biotin, vitA, and probiotics.
Then I mix in an ounce (about two tablespoonfuls) of the wellness COREwhich is 50% protein and 18% fat.
The entire recipe offers her 37% protein, 35% fat almost a 50/50 ratio of fat and protein! with a high moisture content which offers easier digestability!
Its nice to pick her up and feel a tiny tubular body instead of a flat angular body! Her tiny haunches are beginning to develop tiny muscles too!
When I see how fast her tiny body is turning good protein into ferret I get very upset that her former owners couldn't bother to take the time o at the very least purchase her a quality kibble! Much as I dislike kibble - I had to use kibble as a base for her transition; but the crud that is offered as Walmart pet food hadn't ought to even be used to feed ants!
Being poisoned I wondered if her system had suffered irreversible damage. But see for yourself the wonderful changes and proof that her system is in fact working well:(review the dates - 5 days!)
This afternoon, just short of exactly one week with me, she ate an entire diced Turkey heart with just a dusting of Uncle Jims duk Soup! Tonight;s dinner I'll introduce a COrnish Gme hen wing tip to her!
Go Liza, go Liza, go Liza!
