I would get a playpen or some type of Martin's cage they are all good just make sure you get one big enough.
www.martinscages.com/products/cages/ferret/I do not recommend cubes they are dangerous.
Read this story and you will see why. This did not happen to me but I have permission to cross post where needed.
Well, last night almost ended in disaster. I recently adopted two new ferrets, Maddie and Maverick. I thought I had ferret-proofed the room pretty well. Everything was out of their reach. Well, I had zip-tied those cube storage grid thingies (the ones I had made my first cage out of) to the front of the bottom shelf on my FN cage, where I store their food. Hadn't even stopped to think that being smaller than the boys, Maddie could get her head through...
My boyfriend's sis and I were playing with the ferts.n I went into my room for a minute to get something. I hear her yelling, but I thought they were just crawling up her pants or something. I couldn't hear what she was saying. Two minutes later she bursts in the bedrrom door, and tells me Maddie is stuck and she had been yelling for me.
So I drop everything I am holding and run into the spare room where the cage is. Sure enough, Miss Maddie was stuck in there good. She apparently had gotten her head through the bars and most of her body. She then had gotten stuck before her hips, which were too wide to get through. I tried greasing her up with Crisco and getting her through, but she couldn't get her hips through, and I couldn't push her ribs in more to get her to back out. She was in there GOOD.
So my bf's dad comes upstairs with his toola=s and takes his pliers and tries to bend the bars. He couldn't get enough leverage with her body in there. Poor Maddie was screaming and flailing. I th0ought for a minute that I would let her get out on her own, if she wiggled enough she could get out. But after about 2 seconds of her wiggling and screeching, I realized she would hurt herself if she continued. So I had my bf's sis scruff her. She pretty much just layed there, mumbling and swearing at us in ferret-ese. Maverick came over and tried to help her, but she bit him. I put all the other ferrets away, and I went and got my purse and changed.
I had also called a friend who used to own ferrets to see if she had any bright ideas. She said she would be right over with her bf, who happens to be my bf's brother. By the time she got there, though, I had decided that it was time to go to the Emergency vet. We were loading maddie into the car when she got there.
Her and her bf got in the car with us and I told her how scared I was, because all I had was $79 at the moment, I couldn't afford to go to the emergency vet. Her bf said to take the ferret tto the hospital or the fire dept. At first I thought he was crazy but he said that they would have wire cutters, which is what the vet would do. So when we got to the fire station, nobody was there. Well, we called a friend who lived about one minute from me (luckily I live cose to him and the station!) and went over there because he said he had wire cutters.
So we get there, and with about 10 people in the living room, Maddie is finally set free. She was so scared and didn't know where she was. She seemed fine though. We put her down and let her walk to make sure she hadn't hurt herself. She walked okay.
This morning I took all 4 to the Banfield Vet at the Petsmart I work at. They have Wellness hours on Tues, Thurs and Saturdays from 2-4 pm, where the office visit is free. Otherwise it would have cost $150 just to walk in! SO everyone got weighed and got a physical. They are all doing great according to the vet. Even lil' Maddie, who he says seems to have no lasting damage. (I was so happy to hear that.)
So now everyone is in their cages with frozen water bottles to sleep by, and fans on. We are going out to Walmart later tonight to buy an AC, but until then all is calm. Lol. I am just so thankful I didn't lose my little Maddie, I thought for sure the way she was squirming before I scruffed her would have caused some kind of internal injury. So needless to say, those grids are gone.
These are the grids that I am talking bout. I took apart the cage and got them an FN, but I used the grids to block off the bottom of the FN so they couldn't get into their food during playtime. Bad idea. I didn't even think about the possibilty of them getting hurt. I am so lucky Maddie is okay!
