Hi Everyone,
I Got a dehydrator for making ferret treats. i LOVE it!!!
I just prepared 3.2 lbs. of meat in less than a half hour, and it will take about 4 hours to dehyrate the suff.
This time, I used ground turkey and grounds buffalo. I've done beef and lamb as well. The unit comes with a "cookie gun"-like press, so you can pump the meat strips directly on to the dehydrator trays. Like I said, I just prepped over 3 lbs of meat in less than a half hour!
I've also sliced up cheap cuts of lamb, etc. and i've done the ground lamb as well. Warning - lamb stinks when it cooks, so I put it in the garage for dehydration. I haven't tried organ meat yet.
Needless to say, the unit has more than already payed for itself, and I have lots of meat in the fridge for the brats.
The dehydrator uses some heat (155 degrees, which is not supposed to degrade the nutrients out of the meat (besides, these are treats - not regular diet.)
This is so convenient...
1. the "cookie-gun" works really welll on ground meats, and it has 3 different attachments for different meat grinds andor jerky shapes (including round sticks!shapes)
2.I don't even flip the meat over and/or blot it while cooking as is recommended
3. Has a built in fan so there's no need to rotate trays (as with some dehydrators)
4.adjustable thermostat and instruction booklet for different types of foods - veggies, etc.
5. Comes with 4 trays, but you can buy additional trays. You can use up to 12 trays at a time. (I've gotten 4 lbs of meat on the 4 trays alone. 1 lb. of fresh meat yields approx. 1/3 lb. dehydrated.)
5. EASY to clean!!! I put all the racks and even the bottom piece in the dishwaster (the top is not washed and stays clean - there are no sides- they're part of the stacking tray system. PLEASE NOTE - the instructions tell you to hand wash the stuff. I think you'll be fine if you place the intems away from the heating element (on the top rack. I disassemble the gun and put that in the dishwasher as well. With ground meat, there is no cleanup. You simply open the meat package, place the meat directly into the gun and squeeze the meat directly onto the trays - this is sooooo easy I can't beleive it!!!!
Here's the Unit I have:
Open country Adventure Campware Food Dehdrator and Jerky maker - 500 watts (Trailmaster) There's a larger unit, but this one is perfet for me.I don't even think I'll bother with extra trays) Warning: there is a cheaper unit that is for using at the campsite - but you have to rotate the trays.

There's a digital trailmaster unit that's expensive, so if you ee a trailmaster that's reall expensive, lot for the regular mode.
